Update on Rising Voices Microgrant Selection Process

With the large number of proposals received from more than 90 countries around the world, the Rising Voices team has been carefully reviewing each of the submitted applications for the microgrants for citizen media outreach projects. We are pleased to announce that we have selected the finalists, who have already been contacted for the next and final round in the selection process. From these finalists, we will select the next class of grantees. We will announce the winners on the Rising Voices website soon.

We are unable to contact each applicant individually. If you applied and have not been contacted already, we are sorry to inform that your project did not make the final round. There were so many great ideas from many underrepresented communities around the world, but unfortunately our funds are limited and we cannot fund every project. We hope that you stay involved with Rising Voices, and if you do decide to implement your project, please let us know and we'd be happy to share your work with the rest of the community. Please keep an eye out for the next round of microgrant funding. You are always welcome to reapply.

I didn’t apply for a grant, though a colleague did. While I have respect for Global Voices, I always find it regrettable when organizations choose not to offer an hour or so to draft and circulate a simple email of thanks to the many hard-working grantees waiting for their decisions.
    Poor form.

    • Yes, I understand. We did send out individual emails upon receipt of proposal submission, as well as at the beginning of the selection to explain the process. We ran into many problems with this because many email services cap the number of emails one can send out and many reported not receiving the email because it ended up in the spam folder. With 700+ emails and a very limited staff, it was quite difficult to do the same for this last message.

We’ll look into other options for the next round of proposals. Thanks for your feedback.

  • So, which were the winning projects? Would like to know. Thanks

  • Can we get feedback on our proposals?

  • I would really echo the sentiments given above,it can even be better to let people know the shortlisted proposals are this ones ( perhaps publish them on your website )then from there people are able to follow up and know if they didnt qualify. But as it is of now,you cannot know either way say your email had problems and the notification didnt reach you and you cant get further information, what do you do?
When was the date that someone needed to have been contacted to know if they are moving to the next stage or not? I believe Rising Global Voices is about making available information when it is needed but unfortunately,it is proving otherwise and i am afraid, can something be done to correct this??

  • We have been receiving many requests for individual feedback on proposals. Since we had a committee review each of the proposals, it would be difficult to speak for them regarding why or why not they did not choose a particular proposal for the final round.

However, because there is a lot of interest in improving the applications, we will make sure to provide more assistance and tips for proposal writing prior to the next round of funding.
