Ukraine: Blogging to Find New Self-Identification

Categories: Drop-In Center, Rising Voices Projects, Translation

For people living with drug addiction, becoming a patient of the substitution therapy [1]means significant changes in one's life. The process of returning to normal life from a life of an injection drug user [2]requires not only changes in lifestyle, but also changes on a psychological level. The patients need to reconsider their life, their position in society, and their relations with other people. For some, blogging may be one of the tools in helping to look inward and to discuss the concerns with likeminded people.

Bloggers living with a drug addiction from the Association of the Substitution Treatment Advocates of Ukraine [ru] [4]posts much about their emotional experience associated with their participation in harm reduction [5]programs. Blogger CHE ZET [6] from Chernihiv [7]posted about his feelings. He wrote in the blog [8]:

In March of last year, I attended a training session in Dnepropetrovsk “How to identify a leader and create an effective team”. I remember I was touched by the words of our trainer Sergey Makoveyev from Donetsk. I do not remember what he said word by word but in short, the meaning was the following: “I was pleasantly surprised to meet interesting people among the patients of the therapy, but not the ‘vegetable garden”.

It is always good to hear nice words about you but I started thinking about his statement, as I have already heard similar things about us. Things like …since we joined the therapy we have lost all the interest in that life, calmed down, and started to look like ordinary garden weeds, boring, gloomy, and useless. Yes, sometimes I have a feeling that I have woken up, but life passes by me and I am staying on a sidewalk as a total loser. Friends who are not drug addicts are showing off with their accomplishments and successes, and you .. in the best case scenario, are listening with an interest like a sport fan but from a lower league; you do not really have much to show off …you have no confidence and have a permanent depression. It looks like the only thing you can do is to give up … But then you realize that if you have been able to quite drugs it means something, it means that somebody in the sky loves you and your life is not meaningless! So it is a sin to burn out or become an alcoholic or return to drugs and not to use your chance. And if so, you need to work hard for yourselves, to change habits formed over the years and there are no such things as ‘I do not know how’ and “I can’t”. It is not easy to overcome your laziness and inertia but nobody promised that it will be an easy thing to do.

Blogger Esenin [10]posted her emotional reaction on a newspaper article praising a lady who was able to fully quit drugs without assistance of the harm reduction programs. She blogged [11]:

This is what we have read in a Russian newspaper ‘Methanol is for those who are powerless, but I have overpowered this!’.

[…]

First I was hurt. So, if we are in the program, we are powerless, weak, and useless? First I wanted to post comments that it is not true. Look at yourselves! The disease cannot just disappear…

But …then I started thinking. May be this makes sense? Maybe I should envy this women? She was able to overpower. Just imagine how strong she feels and to what extend she can rely on herself.

[…]

But I know one thing, I am also strong. This is how it should be. Ok, today I cannot answer all of the questions, today I am afraid to be just on my own without the program and some people who consider me powerless! But anyway I am grateful to my destiny … that I am alive and I do not need somebody to care about me all the time. I can think and move for myself […] these stairs to normal life are fairly unsteady! We are grateful for the program and always try to explain and convince all people around us – please understand, this is our life buoy! Do not touch it!
