IndigiTUBE: Media Made By And For The Indigenous People In Remote Australia

Aboriginal people in remote parts of Australia remain the most marginalized group in the country who face poverty and discrimination everyday. In general the perceptions are that Aboriginal Australians somehow get special treatment. But their history of dispossession and disadvantage shows the reality.

IndigiTUBE is an online community for sharing and accessing media made by and for Indigenous people in remote Australia. It has been developed by Alice Springs based community funded organization, Indigenous Community Television (ICTV) & the national body – Indigenous Remote Communications Association (IRCA). IndigiTUBE includes both a radio portal and a video streaming service.

The website features videos in 25 different Indigenous languages with topics ranging from hunting, fishing and cooking shows, bird identification, music videos and traditional ceremonies.

Claire at Australian Aboriginal Language Student Blog writes:

IndigiTUBE has a range of video clips of music, traditional stories and dance as well as language lessons from remote communities in Australia. The language groups include Ngaanjatjara, Pitjantjatjara, Gija and Karrajarri. There are clips from the Ngapartji Ngapartji website which are Pitjantjatjara Language lessons. Have a look if you want to learn some language, sing a song, or see if you recognise people. There are a lot of clips from PY Media and the APY Lands. The length of the videos varies from 5 to 60 minutes. There is a search engine to help you find what you are looking for. As the site says “it has been set up to help share our music, our stories and our lives – with each other, and with the world!”

Here is a short film titled “Lungkarta“. The women artists of Warakurna tell the story of the Blue Tongue Lizard Dreaming and the kids listen, and respect the country's story, and dance at the end.
