First Training with Dizha Kieru Radio Team [4]: A town with its own cellular network: Dizha Kieru, one of this year's micrograntees, held a training session about how to best use this new technology, an SMS system allowing radio team members to send out news and text messages directly to inhabitants’ phones in the village at no cost.
Becoming a Community Photographer: A Window Into the “Real India” [5]: “Storytelling Through Photography” workshops taught photo documentary skills to local community reporter-activists, illustrating daily life and its difficulties in rural India, a project collaboratively run by Video Volunteers [6]and the Magnum Foundation [7].
Story-Making Machines: Zeega [8]: Rising Voices republishes an interview conducted by Transom.org [9], who spoke with Kara Oehler, the co-founder of Zeega [10], a new form of interactive media, enabling anyone to tell stories by combining media from the cloud, curating, remixing, and sharing it with the world.

Where is Media in America? An Interview with Michael Copps [11]: Rising Voices asks former US Federal Communications Commissioner to comment on the current state of media access in America, and what its future might look like.
Zapoteco Community Launches Autonomous Cellular Network [12]: A rural indigenous village in the mountains of Oaxaca teams up with the NGO Rhizomatica [13] to form the first autonomous, community-run cellular network in the world. The project, Dizha Kieru [14], is one of this year's Rising Voices micrograntees.
Awards, Competitions, and Grants
T [15]he Web We Want project has a small grants program now open for projects working to make the web free, open and accessible, supporting national advocacy and campaigning efforts, with an emphasis on the Global South. The African Story Challenge is seeking applications to fund great story ideas on health. This is the second round of its pan-African journalism competition.
