In 2019, we are inviting several hosts to manage [1] the @ActLenguas (Language Activism) Twitter account and to share their experiences with the revitalization and promotion of their native languages. This profile post is about Tajëëw Beatriz Díaz Robles (@tajeewdr [2]) and what she plans to discuss during her week as host.
Rising Voices (RV): Please tell us about yourself.
Soy Tajëëw Beatriz Díaz Robles, soy mixe de Tlahuitoltepec (Oaxaca, México). Formo parte del Colectivo Colmix (www.colmix.org [3]), lo que hacemos en Colmix es impulsar y desarrollar actividades de investigación, difusión, reflexión sobre el pueblo mixe, principalmente sobre la lengua. Usamos algunas plataformas digitales para difundir pero también estamos muy interesados en hacer llegar la información a los espacios donde el contenido digital no llega fácilmente. Nuestro trabajo parte de los procesos que de por sí existen en nuestra región, las generaciones que nos anteceden han hecho un trabajo importante y fundamental para establecer las bases de un proyecto regional para la lecto-escritura de la lengua.Por cuestiones laborales tuve la fortuna de formar parte del comité organizador del primer encuentro de activismo digital de lenguas indígenas en México, un espacio que nos permitió conocer muchísimos proyectos que usan internet y otras plataformas para dar a conocer sus lenguas y así contribuir con su revitalización y la sensibilización. Este encuentro generó muchas colaboraciones posteriores entre los asistentes.
Actualmente estoy coordinando un proyecto relacionado con tecnología, el software libre y las lenguas indígenas de Oaxaca. @EndlessOaxaca
I'm Tajëëw Beatriz Díaz Robles, I'm a mixe from Tlahuitoltepec (Oaxaca, Mexico). I am a member of the Colmix Collective (www.colmix.org), which promotes and develops research activities, dissemination, reflection on the Mixe people, mainly on the language. We use some digital platforms to disseminate information, but we are also very interested in getting the information to spaces where digital content is not readily available. Our work starts from the processes that already exist in our region. The generations that have preceded us have done an important and fundamental work to establish the foundation of a regional project focusing on the reading and writing of the language.
Due to my work, I was fortunate to be part of the organizing committee of the first meeting of indigenous language digital activism in Mexico, which was a space that allowed us to get to know many projects that use the internet and other platforms to publicize their languages and thus contribute to their revitalization and awareness. This meeting generated many subsequent collaborations among the attendees.
I am currently coordinating a project called @EndlessOaxaca related to technology, free software, and indigenous languages of Oaxaca.
RV: What is the current status of your language on the internet and offline?
El mixe, al igual que todas las lenguas indígenas, está en riesgo de desaparición, una de las principales razones es que las transmisión generacional está debilitándose, en Tlahuitoltepec (centro) es muy común que los niños ya sólo hablen español, los espacios de uso para el mixe, sobre todo para las nuevas generaciones están disminuyendo. El acceso a internet es limitado, pero existe, hay diversas páginas que comparten contenido bilingüe-españo-mixe. Aunque la mayoría de las interacciones se realizan en español sí hay muchos usuarios que escriben en lengua mixe sobre todo para bromear.
The mixe language, like all indigenous languages, is at risk of disappearance. One of the main reasons is that the generational transmission is weakening. In Tlahuitoltepec (center) it is very common for children to speak only Spanish, and the spaces where mine is used, especially by the new generations, are decreasing. Internet access is limited, but there are several web pages that share bilingual Spanish-Mixe content. Although most of the interactions are conducted in Spanish, there are many users who write in the Mixe language, mostly to joke with one another.
RV: On what topics do you plan to focus during the week that you’ll manage the @ActLenguas Twitter account?
En la semana quiero compartir lo que considero algunos de los principales retos del trabajo digital de personas que dedican parte de su tiempo al activismo por sus lenguas en internet y a las diferentes formas de colaboración que existen o que podrían existir entre procesos preexistentes a lo digital. Esto como una invitación a la conversación y a la construcción de estrategias para asegurar que los proyectos digitales puedan perdurar y realmente tener un impacto en los hablantes de la lengua.
During the week, I want to share what I consider to be some of the main challenges for those people who dedicate part of their time to digital activism for their languages online, as well as the different forms of collaborations. This as an invitation to a conversation and the construction of strategies to ensure that digital projects can last and really have an impact on the speakers of the language.
RV: What are the main motivations for your digital activism for your language? What are your hopes and dreams for your language?
En las comunidades donde existe acceso a internet las nuevas generaciones son nativos digitales, aún con la conexión limitada, trabajar por visibilizar y por usas las lenguas en esas plataformas es importante para su estatus. Pero esto es sólo una herramienta entre muchas, el activismo digital será útil en la medida en que promueva el uso cotidiano de la lengua, genere y fortalezca los espacios de uso.Todas las lenguas del mundo deben poderse hablar en cualquier espacio y estar en cualquier soporte, sea este digital o físico. Mi sueño es que en un tiempo no muy lejano, las siguientes generaciones de mixes sigan hablando su lengua y puedan tener educación en esta lengua. Que puedan disfrutar del multilingüismo y que no discriminen a nadie por la lengua que habla.
In the communities where there is internet access, the new generations are digital natives, even with the limited connection, who are working to make their language visible on these platforms is important for their status. But this is just one tool among many, digital activism will be useful insofar as it promotes the daily use of the language, generates and strengthens those spaces where the language can be used.
All the languages of the world should be able to spoken in any space and be able to be supported, whether the space is digital or physical. My dream is that in a not too distant time, the next generations of Mixes will continue to speak their language and may access education in this language. That they can enjoy multilingualism and that no one is discriminated against because of the language they speak.
