Rising Voices (RV): Please tell us about yourself.
Soy Kiado Cruz, pertenezco a la comunidad de Santa Cruz Yagavila, en la Sierra de Juárez de Oaxaca. Ahí está enterrado mi ombligo y el de mis abuelos. Ahí he vivido. Ahí florece mi familia, junto a la milpa que cultivamos. En los últimos diez años me he enfocado en hacer resonar mi lengua materna, el zapoteco, en los medios digitales, ocupando el lenguaje audiovisual; en otras palabras realizando expresiones de activismo digital con el fin de democratizar la Internet.
My name is Kiado Cruz, I’m from the community of Santa Cruz Yagavila, in the Sierra de Juárez de Oaxaca. My roots and those of my grandparents are there. I lived there. My family flourishes there, next to the milpa we farm. During the last ten years, I have focused on making my mother tongue, Zapotec, resonate in digital media, occupying the audiovisual language; in other words, making expressions of digital activism in order to democratize the internet.
RV: What is the current status of your language on the internet and offline?
En los últimos años, se ha generado un aumento del uso de lenguas indígenas en el ciberespacio, muchas lenguas como el zapoteco están presentes en las redes sociales o en plataformas para la localización de Software Libre (código abierto). Sin embargo, la pérdida de lenguas indígenas también tiene un incremento acelerado y se estima que en la próxima década desaparecerá más de la mitad de la diversidad lingüística del mundo, si no se desarrollan políticas o programas encaminados a fortalecer los procesos de recuperación y revitalización lingüística. Hacer que las lenguas participen en los medios mayoritariamente monolingües o dentro del bilingüismo monocultural de la Internet, y posicionar el Didza Xhidza en los medios digitales son para mi una postura política, una postura que actualmente asumimos las personas y pueblos que hablamos otras lenguas dentro de un mundo diverso de voces y sonidos que retumban este mundo que viaja a alta velocidad, sin rumbo y distópico.
In recent years, there has been an increase in the use of indigenous languages in cyberspace, many languages such as Zapotec are present in social networks or platforms for the localization of Free Software (open source). However, the loss of indigenous languages also has been increasing at an accelerated pace and it is estimated that in the next decade, more than half of the world's linguistic diversity will disappear, if policies or programs aimed at strengthening linguistic recovery and revitalization processes are not developed. Helping languages participate in the monolingual media or in the monocultural bilingualism of the internet, and positioning the Didza Xhidza language (Zapotec) in digital media are for me a political position. It is a position that Peoples that speak other languages within a diverse world of voices and sounds that resound in this world traveling at high speeds, without direction, and dystopian.
RV: On what topics do you plan to focus during the week that you’ll manage the @ActLenguas Twitter account?
Quiero enfocarme en temas específicos sin olvidar sus variaciones, un buen comienzo será escribir en zapoteco/español las expresiones de la lengua xhidza: poesía, canto, danza, y comida, para realizar un reflexión crítica de la situación actual y poner en diálogo el territorio digital con las voces de los pueblos del mundo. En el marco de la declaración del Año Internacional de las Lenguas Indígenas, quiero hacer hincapié en la consolidación de una política lingüística tangible y que obligue a los Estados a mirar estos pequeños esfuerzos de activismo digital, acciones que contribuyen en la revitalización de las lenguas en el estado de Oaxaca y en otras partes del mundo.
I would like to focus on specific topics without forgetting their variations, a good start will be to write the expressions of the xhidza (Zapotec) language: poetry, song, dance, and food in Zapotec/Spanish, to provide a critical reflection of the current situation and to have a dialogue with the voices of the Peoples of the world in this digital space. In the framework of the declaration of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, I would like to emphasize the consolidation of a tangible language policy that make an obligation for States to look at these small efforts of digital activism, actions that contribute to the revitalization of languages in the state of Oaxaca and in other parts of the world.
RV: What are the main motivations for your digital activism for your language? What are your hopes and dreams for your language?
Sueño para mi lengua, muchas lenguas posibles, un nido de lenguas. Mi motivación más fuerte ha sido poder usar los medios audiovisuales (radio y TV) para decir mi palabra, la palabra zapoteca #DidzaXhidza. Considero que los medios audiovisuales son una fuente sustancial para revitalizar las lenguas indígenas, más allá de la documentación lingüística. Participo activamente en la localización, implementación y uso de software libre como Firefox para traducirlo al Zapoteco, con la idea de intervenir los códigos binarios para una posible apropiación de las Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación por y para los pueblos indígenas. Llegué a las redes sociales con la publicación de memes, gráfica, carteles y demás recursos para hacer que la lengua xhidza exista en los medios digitales, con la finalidad de empezar a escribir en zapoteco y que los usuarios del Internet provenientes de los pueblos zapotecos xhidza reivindiquemos la lengua, y provocar un diálogo intercultural en las redes sociales.
I dream for my language, many possible languages, a nest of languages. My strongest motivation has been to be able to use audiovisual media (radio and TV) to say my word, the Zapotec word #DidzaXhidza. I consider that audiovisual media is a substantial way to revitalize indigenous languages, beyond linguistic documentation. I actively participate in the localization, implementation, and use of free software such as Firefox to translate it into Zapotec, with the idea of intervening binary codes for a possible appropriation of Information and Communication Technologies by and for indigenous peoples. I arrived to social networks with the publication of memes, graphics, posters, and other resources to help make the language xhidza exist in digital media, with the aim of starting to write in Zapotec and that Internet users from the Zapotec xhidza villages can revindicate the language, and provoke an intercultural dialogue on social networks.
