In 2019, we are inviting several hosts to manage [1] the @ActLenguas (Language Activism) Twitter account and to share their experiences with the revitalization and promotion of their native languages. This profile post is about Netzahualcóyotl López (@tunchakua [2]) and what he plans to discuss during his week as host.

Rising Voices (RV): Please tell us about yourself.

I am from Yucuhiti, Oaxaca. I speak Mixtec of the southwest. I'm a fan of software development, and I help in localizing the Firefox browser in Southwestern Mixtec for both in the mobile and web version. Some time ago I also developed an App to learn Mixtec [3].

RV: What is the current status of your language on the internet and offline?

The Mixtec language has more and more presence on websites, such as Facebook campaigns and online translation software. It is an integration that is in a constant state of evolution. However, even with the presence of Mixtec on the internet, it is still necessary to raise awareness so that native speakers can revitalize the use of the Mixtec language in the communities, primarily with new generations.

RV: On what topics do you plan to focus during the week that you’ll manage the @ActLenguas Twitter account?

Lenguas indígenas con presencia en las tecnologías.

The presence of indigenous languages in technology.

RV: What are the main motivations for your digital activism for your language? What are your hopes and dreams for your language?

How great it is to see content in my language on the internet. May the new generations continue to speak and continue to preserve it from generation to generation.
