In 2020, we continue our social media campaign by inviting different hosts [1] to manage the @ActLenguas [2] (Language Activism) Twitter account and share their experiences with the revitalization of and advocacy for native languages. This profile post is about Alcides Javier Torres Gutt (@torresgutt [3]) and what he plans to discuss during his week as a host.

Rising Voices (RV): Please tell us about yourself.

My name is Alcides Torres, I am a Professor at the Polytechnic Faculty of the National University of Asunción [4]. I am currently a Mozilla representative in Paraguay [5], where I am the General Coordinator for the translation, validation, and update of the Mozilla Firefox browser in Guaraní. I also want to share that there is also a 60%-completed alpha version of Libre Office [6] in Guaraní for which I coordinate the translation.

RV: What is the current status of your language on the internet and offline?

Since 2014 we have been working on the translation and validation of two products: Firefox in Guaraní for desktop [9] and for mobile.  [8]Paraguay is a bilingual Spanish and Guaraní country, where 90% of the population speak and write in Guaraní, but online, there is only 20% representation.

RV: On what topics do you plan to focus during the week that you’ll manage the @ActLenguas Twitter account?

I will focus on Mozilla's work in translation, as well as poetry in Guaraní. I will discuss about online translations from Spanish to Guaraní, and about options to download the alpha version of Libre office in Guaraní.

RV: What are the main motivations for your digital activism, and your hopes for your language?

I want to promote the Guaraní language and different topics associated with the language on online social networks, in order to value its roots and above all, so that the Guaraní languages does not disappear.
