MICEC TikTok

The Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Education Centre’s TikTok page, managed by MICEC staff, emerged as a way to connect to their community during the COVID-19 pandemic while their doors were closed. Initially, the content featured culturally relevant humor, book recommendations from their collection of language learning resources and library, as well as cultural activities. As the page evolved, it became evident that the community had a strong desire for language-focused content. Thus began their journey of sharing Ininímowin/Nēhinawēwin (Swampy Cree) and Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) online.
According to staff, TikTok significantly expanded their reach as an organization. Traditionally, MICEC was accessible only during regular office hours which often excluded youth from participating in their programs, and accessing their resources for the majority of the year. The platform bridged the gap, and provided a space where culture, language, and community could thrive beyond the confines of an 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM schedule.
