Microgrants

We are not currently accepting applications for our microgrants for citizen media outreach projects. Please check back for future funding opportunities.

Since 2007, we have funded and mentored 62 projects from around the world. Here, we present a brief history of the microgrant competitions held during that time period. Please visit the Grantee page for a more in-depth look at each project.


Indigenous Language Digital Activism Microgrants 2016

Another special microgrant competition for indigenous language digital activism projects in Latin America was launched on October 18, 2015, where we received 63 applications representing 48 different languages. Read about the five winners from Argentina, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Mexico.


Microgrants Amazonía 2014

A special microgrant competition was held for projects based in the Amazon region of South America and was launched on June 13, 2014, where we received 52 proposals from 6 countries. Read about the seven winners Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.

This initiative was made possible through the support of Avina Americas, Fundación Avina, and the Skoll Foundation. The interactive platform in both Spanish and Portuguese will remain online to facilitate network-building among applicants.


Microgrants 2014
Rising Voices Microgrants 2014The 2014 global microgrant competition was launched on March 12, 2014, where we received 598 proposals from 93 countries. Read about the eleven winners from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Guatemala, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Uganda, and the United States.

The interactive platform will remain online to facilitate network-building among applicants.

The 2013 global microgrant competition was launched on February 7, 2013, where we received 870 proposals for citizen media projects from 97 countries from around the world. Read about the five winners from Argentina, Bhutan, Fiji, Mexico, and Niger.

Microgrants 2012

The 2012 global microgrant competition was launched on January 17, 2012, where we received 1178 applications from 122 countries. Read about the six winners from Guatemala, Myanmar, Palestine, Paraguay, Peru, and the United States.


Microgrants 2011

The 2011 global microgrant competition was launched on January 11, 2011, where we received 750 applications from 90 countries. Read about the five winners from Brazil, Guinea-Bissau, Greece, India, and Mali.


Microgrants for Egypt 2010

A microgrant competition specifically targeted to community groups in Egypt was launched on April 14, 2010, where we received 42 applications from across the country. The initiative was made possible through a collaboration with the Heinrich Böll Foundation. Read about the three winners from the country.


Microgrants 2009

The 2009 microgrant competition was launched on December 23, 2008, where we received 270 applications in total. Read about the five winners from China, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mongolia, and Yemen.


Microgrants for Health 2008

A special health-related microgrant competition was launched on April 30, 2008, where we received 110 applications from 50 countries. The initiative was made possible through a collaboration with the Open Society Institute Public Health Program’s Health Media Initiative. Microgrants 2007 – Part II

The second global microgrant competition held in 2007 was launched on November 1, 2007, where we received 63 project proposals from over 35 different countries. Read about the five winners from Kenya, Iran, Madagascar, Jamaica, and Uruguay.
