This project aims to teach video production to ten underprivileged youth, ages 14-20, in a Rio de Janeiro slum to empower and help them overcome the stigma and stereotypes associated with their population, as portrayed by the media. Each participant will produce a short Digital Storytelling about their future goals and life often shaped by violence and drug trafficking.

Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Rio de Janeiro
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
Youth in this project reside in Manguinhos. Although a slum, this region of Rio de Janeiro has significant socioeconomic disparity. Recently, the Pacifying Police Unit (UPP) occupied the Manguinhos community. The situation’s superficial portrayal by mass media suggests that residents are content with the occupation. Such online stereotyping can discourage youth from achieving beyond their stigma, and further perpetuate a cycle of poverty.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
This project aims to empower youth, raise public awareness, and de-stigmatize slum life through technical training and mentorship, in developing Digital Storytelling. The short videos will depict life stories, experiences, struggles, dreams, plans for the future and perceived roles in their communities. The videos will be published on a blog that will be created and maintained by the participants via social networking.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
This project will establish a partnership with the “Internet, Health and Society Lab” (LAISS), located in Manguinhos. This lab has experience in digital inclusion and video production education within the community. The lab will offer its resources such as computers and workspace. These partnership will surely contribute to the success of the project.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
Ten teenagers will participate in video production and web posting workshops. They will also engage in technical skills training on digital tools and one-on-one mentorships to guide the video production process. Due to their impoverished economic situation, part of the micro-grant funding will be allocated as scholarships for the participants.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
Other than the funding for the mentor/proponent and for the 10 teenagers, this project will need two digital video cameras as the program proposes video production.
