Finalist – Argentina: Los Inestables Radio: More Participation, Less Segregation

Los Inestables Radio seeks to promote the appropriation of digital technology tools by participants, with the aim to promote self-management and the collective participation in each of the stages of radio production. For this purpose, we will conduct training workshops in live broadcasting, recording and editing of podcasts, and the use of social networking so they can share their content with the global community. There will also be biweekly tutorials and sessions to share experiences with other local community organizations.

Finalist – Nepal: Travel Story Camp on Guerrilla Trek

Nepal is a mountainous land-locked country. Although its natural beauty is ever appreciated by all, tourism in Nepal is yet to be cultivated to match with its potentials. Inability to publicize Nepal as a destination internationally has been deemed one of the reasons. Obviously, presence of local tourism entrepreneurs on the internet is barely noticed and it has led to failure in terms of attracting prospective tourists. So it’s our endeavor to put Nepal on the global tourism map through the use of internet in a bid to positively influence the travelers as well as information seekers.

Finalist – Mexico: Audio Visual Record of the Zapotec Language

This project aims to complete all steps to ensure the presence of the Zapotec language in the digital world as it is in danger of disappearing. To achieve this, the project aims to build and strengthen the capabilities of a network of youth to make an audiovisual record of the Zapotec language with the help of an open source application for mobile phone called ojoVoz. Generated content will be published in real time on the platform of the virtual museum of the Zapotec language created in 2012.

Finalist – Ecuador: Open Journalism with Open Technology and Licenses

Many citizen and community journalism initiatives try to strengthen citizens, their rights and freedoms, but that cannot be done with private technologies and under the philosophy of copyright. It is essential that journalists learn about and practice free and open journalism. That way, information and communication can be democratized. Because of that, we want to train communication professionals, journalists and professors on the use of free technology and open licenses. The training will consist of an online component, then an in-classroom part to produce stories of citizen participation.

Finalist – Kenya: The Maasai Woman Diary

After the Kenya General elections in March 2013, Kenya will have the first government under the new constitution. Women need to be educated on the opportunities and benefits that come with the new system of governance. This will change the daily activities of the maasai woman. Women will be encouraged to tap the opportunities available to better their lives. This project seeks to give women a voice amidst a culture that dictates for a society ruled by men making women the subject. It will also highlight their socioeconomic needs and share it will the world in a bid to create possible solutions

Finalist – Brazil: This Is Our Place Film Festival

We at Pronesis Institute of Audiovisual and Social Change have been training low-income youth to produce socially and environmentally engaged documentaries. These short documentaries (5 in total) will be shown to the community in a local film festival that will also be open to other local films. All of the films talk about social and environmental problems of the second poorest region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. We hope the festival can be attended by many people, especially youth, and we already have confirmation from the mayor that she will attend.

Finalist – Indonesia: From Disable for Disable Project

The project has two main stages: 1) Providing citizen media training to disable persons and enabling them ability to conduct training to transfer skills they gained to their peers. This will use ToT method and participants are expected to be able use handy came, do simple video and sound editing, and choose message to be delivered in the participatory-advocacy video. 2) Delivering citizen media training by and for disable persons. It gives opportunity to first-stage-participants to exercise their skills and produce an advocacy video with their groups targeted to policy makers.

Finalist – Colombia: Hearing Stories in Our Own Tongue (Wayuunaiki)

The project's aim is to make traditional knowledge, values, and Wayuu cultural identity available and widespread, to strengthen unity and social capital in the Guajira communities of northern Colombia. It will do so through workshops and training that will grant the Wayuu community the tools to prepare, produce and broadcast (podcast) a series of traditional folk tales in their own language to be part of their local community radio programming. The project is developed with the grassroots indigenous organization Wayuu Araurayu which have a local radio station “Jujunula Makuira”.

Finalist – Pakistan: Radio Vision

Presently, majority of the vulnerable youth with special needs tends to withdraw from the society, hiding its talents and potential. Aiming to provide a job market to youth with visually impairments. Radio Vision Pakistan is a project initiated by Visionary Foundation Pakistan, for persons with visual impairments, in this online radio, RJ’s that will conduct the show will be persons with visual impairments. This unique project will open a new window of job opportunities for persons with visual impairments also play a very vital role in the mainstream of the society.

Finalist – South Asian Comics Activists for Gender Justice

Our objective is to open up a debate in the society on the issue of gender equality and bring about a change in South Asian region. Sixteen Grassroots Activists from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal will be trained as Grassroots Comics Trainers to further engage many more female activists/ students in their respective countries to democratise the women voices through the medium of grassroots comics and campaigns. A 6 days trainer’s workshop will be organized in Delhi later this year. Comics have the power of unleashing the potential of self-expression and community action.
