Project aims at digital and social inclusion of elderly people in Rijeka, otherwise considered passive members of society. Participants will be educated in digital photography, journalism, video production, Internet and social networks, and apply gained skills in writing on-line reports about the town’s sights, cultural and historical heritage. At the end of the project, a multilingual guide of Rijeka, seen through their eyes, will be created.
Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Rijeka and its surrounding area, overall 100.000 citizens
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
Elderly people, socially excluded, don’t own a computer or know how to use it, and their families have no time to educate them. Digital literacy will make their life easier in terms of communication or using on-line services (paying bills, ordering groceries). Also, they have vast knowledge of Rijeka that they can use, combined with newly gained skills and personal experiences, in sharing what they know about the town with younger generations.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Participants will photograph and write reports on specific town areas, buildings, artists, politicians and events that influenced its multicultural formation. Several educative videos, photo albums and written reports will be produced and published online. At the end of project, a trilingual online booklet will be published: a guide with precious information produced by those who know Rijeka best for all those who want to find out more about it.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
CTC Rijeka has long experience in organizing IT workshops and has been cooperating with Rijeka's pensioner clubs for several years. We also collaborate with Rijeka's cultural institutions that will help us organize guided tours and allow entrance into places that are usually closed for public. We hope to achieve stronger partnership with Rijeka Tourist Board in publishing the booklet and its presentation to the public and the tourists.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
40 pensioners will be educated in multimedia workshops. Their participation will be ensured by interesting topics, continual media coverage, raising awareness of safe computer usage and existence of a common goal – creation of photo/video guide with inside tips and information about Rijeka and its heritage. Six organized walks around Rijeka will be open for public, so we expect around 300 people to participate as visitors and active reporters.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
Rising Voices will enable online coverage of the project so that transnational community becomes acquainted with its mission. With the dissemination support of Rising Vices this project has potentional to become global. Replication of activities in other local communities will enable development of global video/photo guide developed by socially excluded local residents who becomes included trough usage of Internet applications (Flickr, Facebook).
