This project will support female students in the target locality to end harmful traditional practices. In Ethiopia in general and Dukem locality in particular, access to the internet is insignificant. The girls in the locality will share their experiences in fighting harmful traditional practices through school mini media and local community radios. ICEDA will translate and upload the recorded audios to the national and international literates.

What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Girls who have continued their education saying no to these harmful traditions will be selected. These girls will be provided with audio recorders and battery. They will get one week training in audio recording and storytelling/producing skills to take back home the recorders and do the recordings at their own convenience. The girls will share the recorded daily stories will then be shared to students in other schools at the end of every month.

Since 2000, ICEDA has been working with schools to integrate the issues of harmful traditional practices affecting girls. Girls clubs and mothers’ forums were established .The girls have developed the culture of discussing issues affecting their lives among themselves. The mothers have also developed that culture discuss among themselves. The success of our project on establishing ‘girls club’ and ‘mothers forum’ has won ICEDA trust and respect.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
This project is expected to reach 10,000 to 15,000 school age children and about 3,000 mothers living in rural villages.18 successful/model girls who are survivors of early forced marriage and have created difference in education will be identified. They will be trained on how to use the equipment. The stories will also revolve around their experience on early and forced marriages; about their experiences of circumcision.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
ICEDA has a board member who has master degree in development communication and has been a leading journalist in the Ethiopian television. Hence, with this available human resource, if we get lap top, digital audio recorder and video camera the program could be sustainable through refresher training for the girls. Each will receive video recorder and battery depending on the availability of fund.
