“One out of three women will experience Violence in her life time”! Women around the world are subjected to violence in many forms that has reduced opportunities for women to compete favorably at all levels. These forms of violence include human trafficking, sexual violence and harmful traditional practices like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The more violence against women continues, the more their rights are restricted. The project is meant to enlighten and awaken this group to acquire skills on how to document women’s issues and support women rights activism in our society.

What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Kampala
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
Ten female participants will be selected equally, with two participants from the five divisions of Kampala which is the main capital city of Uganda. As mentioned above, women are subjected to all forms of Violence and in most cases lack underpinning evidence in courts of law. By working with them, they will be given skills on how to provide cases/footage of such women’s rights abuses and documentation of girls/women issues. Supporting voices from women will ensure policies that protect women more especially in marriage, property right sharing or inheritance in case of death of their spouses are passed. Currently the Marriage and Divorce Bill has created some heat in Parliament. The targeted group will be given some skills about computer and internet usage in film documentation world.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Women are expected to acquire film documentation skills on how to document stories about girls/women issues, women’s rights and advocacy. We expect more women documentary film makers and more stories produced each year which will be exhibited in Uganda and viewed on our website around the globe and better still at the annual Manya Human Rights International Film Festival (MHRIFF). This targeted group will be given skills on how to use the film medium to tell stories about them and also be able to produce audio-visual materials about human rights abuses in the communities they live in. These stories will be screened at the annual (MHRIFF).
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
The Organisation run an annual MHRIFF marking the 4th edition in 2013 with this year’s theme focused on “Social Media in promoting (Rule of Law, Good Governance, Democracy and Transparency). The fete has attracted funding in the past from both local and International donors. This proposed activity is an addition to the festival and has got potential to attract more funding for its activities. http://www.manya.org.ug/?q=content/we-are-proud-all-our-sponsors-partners-well-wishers-and-supporters-coming-board-year.The Festival also works with other local partners like Uganda Human Rights Commission, Local Embassies, Film makers (local and international). Another addition is that this year we have planned a Civil Society Organisations focused onto human rights Exhibition for three days.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
In this first phase of training we will train ten female participants selected from the five divisions of Kampala. Two participants will be selected through open call for applications from interested female participants and the best candidates will be chosen. The participants will be given lunch and tea for a period (half day) in six days they will be trained. Expected is film footage by trainees and certification of attendance to participants.
The Project will be a recurring one each year as we plan to take it to rural areas of Uganda.
Describe which technologies, tools, and media you will focus on when training participants.
The tools used for training participants will include; Video Cameras (Available are 8 Handycam digital and semi-professional), Professional Camera, Editing Equipment, Related Internet tools like YouTube will be integrated in later.
The organisation is built on the notion of using the film technology in creating awareness on human rights. We have been organising the annual MHRIFF and this year it will be the fourth edition.
The organisation will hire at least one to two professions who will train the female participants in a holistic approach for film documentation and advocacy of women’s rights.
Describe the facilities where you will hold the workshops.
The venue will be a closed space which can accommodate lectures with a screen and projector. There will be enough space to use cameras and editing equipment. A modem will be provided by the organizers to use the internet where necessary.
What is your current relationship with the community with whom you plan to work? What makes you the most appropriate individual or organization to implement this project?
The organisation has been working in the five divisions of Kampala by screening human rights awareness films, holding of discussions with the locals in those areas. Normally women are few in these video halls we hold such activities and we believe by training more female film makers, it will allow more opportunities for women. This is vivid in our reports from 2010 to 2012. Please visit our website (www.manya.org.ug).
The expertise in film and film related areas make us top-most to implement such a project. The awareness campaign of women’s rights will be more achieved by using the film technology. This means that thousands of viewers will be able to understand what women go through and it will be easier to advocate for better policies during the annual MRIFF.
What specific challenges do you expect to face when planning and implementing your project?
Low or delayed turn-up from the participants and late applicants is a likely. Women who are mothers are likely to miss if not well explained to them such that they are able to inform whoever they stay with to help them out during the training period.
Addressing these challenges will be done by ensuring all the information needed before the training is displayed out. This will allow the participants to make varied choices to ensure the best and reliable applicants are selected for the training.
How will you measure and evaluate the project’s impact, specifically: your primary participants, the wider regional community, or the global digital community?
There will be monitoring tools set aside. This will include both oral and written ones. Participants will be able to measure by the skills and practical knowledge offered to them.
Questions and Answers, Discussion, debates will be the other tools to be used to evaluate the project’s success.
At the end of the training, participants are required to develop a project(s) which will then be presented during the Festival. This comes at the right time focusing on this year’s theme.
By the presentation of their projects during the festival, it will give us a measure of success on how the project has been implemented or has met the set goals. This is a launch of the women film training campaign in using film to make that awareness on women’s issues and their rights.
If your project were to be selected as a Rising Voices grantee, what would be the general timeline of project activities in 2013?
The Project will take at least four to six months to be implemented. This means actual implementation will be achieved in December and the recorded footage/video materials presented by the participants screened during the Manya Human Rights International Film Festival (MHRIFF). Festival dates are December 10-14, 2013.
Activities will include: Open call for applications from female participants to be selected, Training for six days on skills of camera, storyline, editing and final cut. Participants will present their work at the annual MHRIFF.
