The “Ankonsia on – line using mobile phones” project is being focused on the Ankonsia community and is aimed at empowering the active users of mobile phones to be able to surf the internet for information such as News, Academic researches, social networking and also send vital information with their phones. The proposed project intends to make mobile phone technology more useful for accessing the internet by the people of Ankonsia.
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Ankosia in the Wassa Amenfi East District in the Western Region of Ghana.
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
In almost every household within the Ankonsia community, at least one person uses a mobile phone. However, the purpose for the use of these phones by a wide section of the users has mostly been for voice calls and in a few cases for text messaging. This has created a knowledge gap in the community as far as the use of the internet is concerned; hence access to up – to – date information is lacking among most of the youth.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The participants will be encouraged to create pages on some of the social networks such as Facebook, to create awareness on vital issues in and around their community. Each individual participant would create their own account and a page for this project where participants would be educated on teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS and many other socioeconomic issues.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
SNSN has been involved in a research prior to this initiative and has also been involved in training sessions for the youth in the Ankonsia community as well as other communities in the district on carrier guidance and community – led advocacy. The organization has since 2011 organized health and education campaign on keeping a clean and healthy environment during an outbreak of cholera in the district. Dustbins and hand washing bowls were donated
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
The project will target a minimum of one hundred people comprising males and females within the age bracket of 18 to 35 years. Our skilled and experienced trainers will be used for the trainings throughout the project period. We shall also provide suitable training materials that would not create boredom amongst the participants. The trainings would be structured with more hands – on practices and less theory.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
The organization would need avenue for the training and technical advice. Also a video camera, two voice recorders and a lap top would be needed to enhance the project’s success. Again, showcasing the project, while on course, on Rising Voice’s website would be helpful for possible scale – up.
