Our project aims to empower the women of the Nima/Mamobi community, one of the poorest communities in Accra. We hope to train these women to use social media to give them the platform to present their issues to a wide audience enabling them to make a change within their community.

Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Accra
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
Women from the Nima/Mamobi community find it difficult bringing out the challenges they face and have formed a support group called the Mothers Club. Training them on how to use social media to advocate, will give them the platform to present their issues to a wider spectrum and equip them with the necessary skills to bridge the gap between them and the world.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The content of the group’s social media page will mostly consist of the problems faced in their community. These stories include sanitation, women and children abuse and health related issues. By publishing these stories, light will be thrown on issues on the ground and how they can be addressed. Focus will be on blogging, telling stories through digital photography as well as Social networks such as Face book and Twitter.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
The Legal Resources centre is a human rights institution that seeks to develop human rights capacities within communities to ensure social progress and development through the instrumentation of law, justice, development and good governance. Currently we are working on developing training manuals to train 15 women form the Mothers club on Paralegals to empower and know how to go about protecting themselves and individuals in the community.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
20 participants in all will be trained. By tracking the social network that will be used, we will have constant communication with the participants to help sustain the work of the project. The project also seeks to train the first batch of women who will also train and teach the other group members to ensure continuity.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
For continuity, the group will need to be supplied with a laptop, digital camera and an internet modem. Accessible internet will enable others to be trained within the community, it will also allow the women to reach out and follow up on responses received via social networking.
