This project is part of Our Voice (OV) program on promoting LGBT rights in Indonesia through online media. Using rights-based approach, the project will train 30 groups LGBT in Jakarta on journalism. Participants will write about their struggles, thoughts, hopes & dreams, and then we publish them on our website, internet and social network. It is expected that their stories will be used to fight the stigma against LGBT in mainstream media.

What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Jakarta-Indonesia
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
Our Voice is a LGBT organization thus the direct target group is LGBT communities particularly in Jakarta. Due to their different sexual orientations and gender identities LGBT communities in Indonesia are sidelined politically and socially, making them prone to abuse and intimidation. By working on the inside LGBT communities itself, it is part of a strategy to empower them to counter negative publications on LGBT issues in mainstream media.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Using positive approach, participants will write stories on their struggles, thoughts, hopes, and views of mainstream society and government on LGBT rights. It includes stories on their contribution to their family, community & society. Their stories will be published & shared through online media. The output is to create dialog room between LGBT communities and mainstream societies, thus reducing stigma and discrimination toward LGBT.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Other tools
We will use the equipment owned by individuals and Our Voice, such as mobile phones and cameras
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
This project is an extension of existing programs that is supported by Hivos Netherlands and self-fundraising. In addition to financial supports from past and current OV’s donors, the networks NGO and media mainstrem in which OV actively involved will contribute to the success of this project.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
The training will be participated by 30 groups of LGBT, each group consists of 5-10 persons. As Our Voice regularly organizes monthly meeting, these groups will be invited and included in the activity. In addition these groups also will be involved in others Our Voice trainings such as video making, photography and awareness sessions. Through involving them in various activities it is expected that they will sustain their participation
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
This program is partially supported by donors from the Netherlands (Hivos) and a bit of local resources (media fundraising team Ourvoice). In addition we continue to develop fundraising to raise funds and encourage the contribution of each group to the concept of LGBT volunteers. It is difficult, because the activity is still dependent on foreign donors, but hopes to start self slowly.
