Sports remains the most popular activity amongst the youth in Africa, and in Kenya, the most known stars are in football (soccer), rugby and athletics. The role of sports personalities as influencers and models is well known. Unfortunately, very few role models are known amongst the youth in Kenya, and we wish to take young people within our community to tell their stories and inspire others to greatness through simple acts.

What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Nairobi
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
We educate and train with children and youth from some of Kenya's poorest communities, principally from the Kibera Sllums of Nairobi, and from other rural communities in Nyanza and Central, We also have in our center poor children who from slums in Kampala (Uganda), Arusha (Tanzania), Southern Sudan and Bujumbura (Burundi). Many of these children have faced and fought difficulties to become school, national and regional champions.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
We wish to train the children to use online media to document their lives and post on a web platform that provides opportunity for millions of others to learn from those of the same age, and feel inspired to improve their ow lives and those of communities. Through storytelling, the youth can begin to establish a communication pattern that gives new learnings. Of interest will be how each young champion got to where they are today.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
Women Win – gave us initial training on digital storytelling in February 2013
Safaricom Foundation – we hope to interest them in supporting the use of mobile phones
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
We will train an initial 2 people in each of our 32 outreach centers around Nairobi and the region. This makes it 64 young people. We already work with these young people through their schools, and it would therefore be possible to carry out a continuous follow up through 2 to 4 years. We will also use our local student volunteer to work program where they earn points towards their annual awards, to have a consistent support system.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
1. Help us with a recommendation letter to appropriate companies to seek more cameras/phone for the increased numbers (we currently have limited 2 cameras that will have to be shared)
2. Help us get qualified volunteer experts to come and work with us on this for a couple of weeks, we would provide accommodation and meals.
