Sickle cell anaemia is a childhood illness with a high mortality rate,higher than HIV, yet its not on the national health plus media radar. We hope to use Participatory Education Theater (PET) to conduct civic education on the disease. This entertainment-education model is effective in lobbying and mobilization. The plays will be recorded & made into a short documentary that will be uploaded on the internet. Copies will be given to the community.

What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The vision is demystify the disease inorder to promote awareness,control and management of the disease. PET forums will be done in Siaya county educating the community. The plays will be based on issues affecting sicklers and their families. Also, life stories of sicklers living positive lives to encourage others that the disease is not a death sentence. These will be recorded, uploaded on a blog and turned into a documentary for distribution.

We have partnered with Sickle Cell Support Groups in different parts of Nyanza and Western Kenya, the Ministry of Health, the Children Sickle Cell Foundation and St Luke Medical Centre in Kisumu which operates a Sickle Cell Clinic. We are hoping to partner with Plan international and Kemri-Wellcome Trust Research Programme – Kilifi.

How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
15 people from the entertainment group. The drama group will work with JOOF to carry out the PET forums on issues that are relevant to those affected. The forums done every month, recorded and uploaded on a blog set up for education and lobbying purposes. A documentary of the various plays with also be made available. Copies of it will be made available to support groups, schools, NGOs, health facilities and media houses as educational tools.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
A digital video camera to record the forums, digital still camera to take photos of the event to to uploaded on the blog, tripod stand and a laptop that will be used to log onto the net, editing, viewing the recordings and so on.
