Welcome to Griftu in Wajir in North Eastern desert of Kenya. Saddled in between Ethiopia and Somalia over one thousand KM from Nairobi with no tarmac roads, electricity, water, you are lucky to get mobile network. Talk of global village and you are referring to another world. No wonder when travelling to Nairobi, the residents will ask you to greet Kenyans. To train youth on connectivity using mobile, video, and photography giving them a voice.

Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
Griftu is inhabited by somalis, largely pastoralists and the area remains marginalised. Poor connectivity, famine, lack of schools, poor education, early marriages, female genital mutilation (FGM) and generally a culture that doesn't allow women voices.
To empower youth in schools with a telecentre, to use video, photography and the mobile in reaching out the rest of the world. The desert storm.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Desert storm to offer content of needs of the far flung town, from education often mobile schools, famine and hunger, war, conflict, death, the voices of these marginalised lot requires to be heard. With poor connectivity, the best bet is mobile, video and camera to offer connectivity to the world. To engage on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Vision 2030. Surely, the Desert Storm.

Destiny Africa promotes telecentres across the country, a member of the Kenya Network of Telecentres (KenTel) , Telecentre.Org, Global Telecentre Association (GTA) and the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP). We are in touch with youth groups from Griftu which we want to built capacity to pick community voices, the Desert Storm.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
Targets twenty (20) youth who can then train others. To keep in touch and develop the Griftu Community Telecentre as an information centre.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
We require equipment such as Computers to equip the Telecentre to bridge the digital divide. Others include source of energy (renewable energy like solar panels), photocopier, scanner, cameras, video cameras. to have a fully operational resource centre.
