Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Dowa district
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
The Chewa of Dowa have a rich culture that is poorly shared with the outside world. They have embarked on sharing their culture, traditions and way of life globally. They are also struggling so much with environmental and climate change problems as they are predominatly farmers. They want to take responsibility of caring for their environment and share with others online, learn and get feedback from the global community on how to deal with these
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The communities will ably share about their rich culture and the state of their indigenous assets such as land, soil, water, forests, biodiversity, wildlife, crops, plants, rivers/water sources, mountains, cultures and traditions, languages, livelihoods, medicine and health, etc and learn from and share with the global online community on how best to protect, preserve and reclaim these indigenous assets using Mapping, Photography, Social Networks
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
Our organization is already working with these communities in the protection, preservation and reclaimation of the natural and environmental resources through the Indigenous Asset Protection Programme. The project has partnership with Local Government, community governance strutures such as Area Development Committees (ADCs), District Executive Committees (DECs) and Community Based Organizations (CBOS) to ensure sustainability and ownership.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
We will train 30 representatives of the Area Development Committee (ADC), Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and Traditional/Community Leaders who have already been trained in Social and Community Mapping, Transect walks, Community Wealth Mapping, Resource Pockets and Participatory Communication to ensure sustainability of the initiative. The training will help them how best to turn the gathered community information into online discussion
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
We might be very happy if there could be additional support in digital cameras (2), Laptops (2); Linkages with other organizations and initiatives similar to ours so that we can learn from each other as well as tools and resources in the use of ICT for development as well as other mentorship support
