The project involves collecting videos of the dalit (untouchable) people about their life experiences and stories, the difficulties and discriminations they have faced, how they overcame such problems, success stories from their communities. The project aims at developing their self-esteem and confidence and inspires them to break the existing systematic oppression through the expression of their lives with the medium of citizen media.

What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Kathmandu Valley
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
We’ll work with the Dalit community of the Kathmandu Valley. They are the most backward community socially, economically and politically. They’ve been discriminated and oppressed from generations on the basis of Hindu caste system that is prevalent in our country. They don’t have access to education, health, let alone access to technologies. The project will provide opportunities to them to participate for their own empowerment and development.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The content will include everyday life stories, significant life experiences, case studies, success stories, interviews, inspirational videos of how they are fighting for their rights, etc. With the planned broadcasts, the expected outcome of this project will be to create awareness and advocate for the rights of the dalit community, empowerment and also create job opportunities as they will be trained in the specific citizen media tools.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
For this project, we will be working in partnership with the Youth Broadcasting Services, a media house which will support us with human as well as other resources required for providing training and workshop to the dalit community. They will also be instrumental help in the collection and broadcasting of all the contents by the participants in the citizen media.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
The number of participants for this project will be 15 people from the dalit community. We will provide them with minimal stipend so as to motivate them to participate in the project. Since after the completion of the workshops, the participants will be trained in the use of digital tools, it will be an added motivation for them as this will help them to explore further employment opportunities.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
Apart from the funding, Rising Voices can also support us with their valuable guidance, ideas and feedback.
