The project aims to build a new culture of community service among young people living in Nigeria’s most popular slum, Ajegunle. We hope to show them a new way to give back and save lives by giving blood while showcasing their works using various social media tools and telling the world their story. It is hoped that this project will introduce these young people to the wondrous tools available to them to reach the world and tell their stories.
Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Ajegunle, Lagos State
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
Ajegunle is a slum in the Lagos metropolis with 555,000 people living and working on 335 streets. Many young people from this neighborhood are unemployed, at risk, and almost forgotten by the rest of the city. Yet, there are many brilliant and committed citizens residing in this city. The people of Ajegunle are not well represented on the web, and it is time for them to tell their story to the rest of Nigeria and to the world in a positive way.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The team plans to create a social media booth during a blood drive event with our Lifesavers encouraged to showcase their community service by taking pictures and uploading it online. The participants will see live feedback from the Nigerian community using this same booth. Pictures and short stories will be uploaded to a special twitter, Facebook and web feed. The participants will be encouraged to take videos of them telling the Ajegunle story.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
The One Percent Project has formed a partnership with Paradigm Initiative Nigeria, a social enterprise that connects Nigerian youth with ICT-enabled opportunities. The partnership also includes the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Committee that will handle the medical part of the event. The partners also hope to include the Co Creation Hub in this partnership to help with the social media booth for the event.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
200 participants from the Paradign Initiative Nigeria’s Ajegunle.org program will participate in the program.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
It is hoped that Rising Voices can help provide the participants of Lifesavers of Ajegunle with a platform for reaching the rest of the world. We hope that you will help these youths tell their story of community to the world.
