Following the 2012 flood disaster in most parts of Nigeria which according to reports affected over 2 million people particularly those living in riverine communities, there has not been any sustainable development efforts by government to alleviate the suffering of the people apart from the initial relief materials which were mostly diverted by government officials. The people particularly youths are facing severe hardship.

Cross River and Akwa Ibom States of Nigeria
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Our vision is to facilitate development change for youths in targeted flood affected and prone communities by training them on how to document their stories and experiences through citizen media; flickr photography exhibition, twitter and facebook to increase their voices. We are also training staff of local CBOs on how to use digital story telling, podcasts and blogs for development change communication and advocacy.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
our initial visits to some of these communities provided us with the opportunity to familiarize with people particularly the youths of these communities. Also, because of our involvement in Taking IT Global's project “Creating Local Connections” some years ago, we have built strong partnership with IT experts in the development sector which we intend to use as resource persons. also we will partner with youth development ministries
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
This project will directly benefit 50 youths. They are 40 community youths and 10 staff of local CBOs. their participation will be sustained by ongoing mentoring and follow up activities
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
Rising Voices should provide us with sites and links of best practices around the world, notify us of opportunities for further trainings, provide us with resource material and IEC Materials for off line advocacy and awareness creation.
