Nigeria: Resuscitating Efik Culture

I intend to bring together youths 20 years and older who are natives of Efik ethnic group in Akwa-ibom State,Nigeria using Radio broadcast,street search and social media and educate them for 1month on the need to speak their native language and use it as a the primary means of communication. I intend to teach the participants how to create blogs and use social media to promote their native clothings,dress and dance.

What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?

Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.

Nigeria has over 50 languages and over 250 dialects and ethnic groups but Only 3 Ethnic groups(Hausa,Igbo and Yoruba) and their languages plus cultures are given precedence in Nigeria.The remaining languages and cultures,especially Efik, has been relegated to the background and has almost gone into extinction.The Efik ethnic group has rich cultures and fashion and I hope to bring them to lime light.I intend to train youths of 20 years and older.

What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?

My goal is to:
1. Resuscitate the Efik language.
2. Promote Efik Dress style and fashion.
3. Propagate Efik Dance.

Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.

I am a native of Efik ethnic group.I am a descendant from a Royal linage of the Efik tribe. I also have uncles and relations in governmental positions in Akwa-ibom state. I intend to partner with the Nigeria Federal ministry of Arts and culture which is headed by an indigene of Efik.

How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?

I intend to directly train 100 participants but my media outreach will be Nationwide.

Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?

1. 100 laptop computers and internet modems.
2. mobile phones.
