Our goal is to work in collaboration with The Garage School, an NGO engaged in educating the under-privileged children from a slum area located in Clifton, Karachi. Most of these children and their families belong to various religious minority groups. We wish to educate these children and their mothers in various social networking tools to spread their stories and problems on a larger platform through a series of workshops.
Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Karachi
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
We will be working with a community residing in one of the largest slums in Karachi. Most of them are either Hindus or Christians, representing 3% of entire Pakistan. They are often not provided with equal work and educational opportunities. We wish to give them a platform where they can share their hardships and become visible to the modern society.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The children will create content based on their daily activities in the school plus feature their social and financial problems. They will also use social media and other digital platforms to interact with international students plus students from the more privileged parts of Pakistan. We also intend to create a dialogue between these children and the high up politicians, social workers and media personelle using twitter.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
Mrs. Shabina Mustafa has been running this NGO for more than 10 years and the school is supported by a few philanthropists, but it needs additional support to bring the voices of these children and their families belonging to a religious minority to a wider audience. They already have a Facebook page but we wish to train them to bring forward more personalized stories from their community.

a. 40 to 50 students
b. 5 to 8 families
c. 2 instructors
d. 3 experts in social media including a professional photographer
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
