What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Huaraz
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
The target population will be students, potential story-tellers and journalists living in the Andean region of Ancash. By transferring them ICTs we will be generating new independent voices in an environment dominated by non independent local, regional and national media. In the last decade, the region has received money from the mining industry increasing the corruption, social inequality and indigenous exclusion (http://tinyurl.com/d3ogjm8).
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Content created will be addressing development issues such as environmental, cultural identity, development, best practices in local governmental management, agroecology and climate change in the region. The approach of the morning workshops dedicated to the development of a media project will promote this type of content development but the final decision will be of the participants. Preferably, videos and podcasts will be in Quechua language.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
I have made a alliance with Living in Peru (http://www.livinginperu.com), a web dedicated to promoting stories from Peru in English.
I am in communication with Servindi (http://servindi.org), a web dedicated to promote indigenous media in Spanish.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
As the conferences will be free and promotion strategically planned, we expect to have at least 150 participants. A past event about Quechua writing for teachers gathered almost 500 participants, we are following that model as it has proven efficient. Participants can pay a fee in order to receive a certification and educational material. Evaluation consists on the implementation of a online media project, 4 best projects will receive awards.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
Helping with the outreach beyond the Ancash region of the most interesting stories produced.
Supporting through the translation into English of the most interesting stories produced.
