We seek to connect youth globally so they may learn and inspire the children in their communities to take action to improve local environments. We successfully established partnerships in various countries to create online interactive classrooms. The next phase will expand to additional countries and connect through team-based blogging system to share media, stories, comments to develop a deeper sense of youth participation to empower communities
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
School children will produce photos, video, and other various media to document their local environmental actions that will be shared on their blog pages in order for other program sites to view and comment upon. In addition, students will create artwork and writing that would reflect upon their activities and would encourage political advocacy, such as writing a letter to the local mayor about clean water, garbage disposal, or food security.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
Headquartered in the US, we have satellite offices in Brazil and Ghana and partnerships with youth-led organizations in Nigeria and Qatar. The United Nations, NY office communicate frequently with sites and provide web-based training based on contextual need. GAC works to connect children to discuss environmental issues and focus on tree planting, environmental education, water and sanitation. New sites include Mozambique, Nepal, and Seychelles.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
Currently, 300 students have participated in our project and our study has shown students have an increased environmental awareness as well as a greater global awareness of environmental issues. With the introduction of our new phase in introducing more technology by using a team-blogging system along introduction of new partner sites, we plan to double our number of participants to about 600 or more.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
Our partners at the United Nations Federal Credit Union and New York University’s School of Environmental Education are helping to spread the word. Through this grant, we would love for Rising Voices to spread the word about us and our project!
