Zambia: Advocacy for Women Empowerment in Self Help Groups

The Advocacy for Women Empowerment in Self Help Groups is a project aimed at raising the voices of vulnerable rural women through capacity building programs in the three key pillars of the People's Development.

The three key pillars of the project are the social, economic and political development. The project will empower women in the community to break the cultural trends that look at women and girls as recipients of men's decisions.

This appears a good proposal on the surface but it appears to get complex as you read a bit more into it. What compounds the problem is the low literacy levels among the target group which will mean starting the process of imparting the literacy skills to them and eventually other skills to enable them participate in the proposed project. This would make a microgrant look like a drop in the ocean.

Dear Rev. Denis Milanzi. Thank you for your project proposal. I salute you for taking the giant leap on this proposal. Most of us would love to make our political leaders accountable for their promises but we do not have the courage. This is a big project and very challenging. Please do not lose the women on the way. I do not know where they are on the social ladder. If they have to start at literacy level as Mr Ndhlovhu has said it is a long way but you will surely get there. My advice is concentrate on the economic empowerment then the political and other spheres will fall in place. Good Luck. Irene Dube Development and Finance Institute For Rural Women Trust.
