As Youth Forum Zimbabwe, we want to organize a 1 day workshop in Harare for 20 selected members coming from the 10 administrative provinces (2 from each); 10 from the business world and 10 from civil society. We will teach how to use the internet, mainly mobile, in an effective manner, from both a business and an organizational/informational perspective. Once back in their provinces, the teams of 2 will hold 1 free seminar for their communities
Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Harare
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
Zimbabwe population is between 12 and 15 million people, of which 38% is urban and 62% rural. Today 2.7 million people (22%) have “some kind of access” to the internet, mainly from mobile phones. At the same time Zimbabwe is the fastest growing a African country in internet use (mainly mobile). Besides a high level of literacy (90%), superstition and gullibility are widespread, especially in rural areas. A wise use of Internet could free people!
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Each one of the 10 teams of 2 will create a blog or forum and facebook page/group for their communities where to share knowledge and answer questions during and after the seminar. The community will then be encouraged to use the tools taught and offered by the internet to organize autonomously depending on their interests. Mainly business, community building, coordination and information, both general and political will benefit.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
The Youth Forum Zimbabwe is a membership-based non-profit organization with over 5000 fully paid up members across the Country. It was founded in 2004 and is legally registered under the Zimbabwe Youth Council Act. The aim of the Youth Forum is to enhance youth participation and empowerment in policy-dialogue and political decision-making. We can assure a good organizational experience and attendance in such kind of events.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
20 selected members from the 10 administrative provinces (2 from each, one being a local entrepreneur to cover economic aspects of the internet and social media, one from civil society to cover information and communication opportunities) will be trained directly by our seminar, but will hold as many seminars (10) back in their provinces. We estimate conservatively at least 1000 people will be trained in the project.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
While we have experienced members, given your experience we would like a supply of web material and advices to hold the seminar as manuals for social media, wordpress, blogs, community building, business and Social media etc…
