Speak Up against Violence (SUV), is a women initiative project to be implemented by TICFASO Uganda a women CBO dully registered by ministry of internal affairs. Innovatively the project intends to employ social media mechanisms to amplify the voices of marginalized women affected by Gender Based Violence. The project will be implemented in partnership with six radio stations in Teso i.e TBS FM, Etop radio FM, Voice of Teso FM, Veritus radio FM, Joshou FM and Delta FM. The approach will involve training women on GBV social media model, radio talk shows, radio spot messages and social media
Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Kampala, Katakwi District
Describe the specific population with whom you will be working.
The project will benefit women who are survivors of GBV and are stigmatized and discriminated as a result of traditional practices that deny women to enjoy their civil liberties in Teso. Most of these survivors have no clear platform and system to share their stories and come openly to campaign against the problem of GBV. The approach will work as an advocacy measure for women rights. As noted in the recent assessment, lack of access to social media due to lack of money to pay for airtime in radio stations was seen as hindering factor for women to raise their voices.
TICFASO Uganda has been working to empower women their advocacy on their rights and socio economic support where a number of GBV survivors have been identified but not given the chance to voice up their issues.
Who else will be on your team to help implement the project?
The Coordinator of the project will be Aseku Genavive a program manager of TICFASO Uganda (ticfasouganda@yahoo.co.uk) and she will technically be supported by Akia Stalla radio presenter, Anyeko Michael social worker and Amuge Jenifer Radio manager. The project will support women to document their stories for sharing with the world. This way it will reduce stigma, discrimination, exclusion and abuse of women resulting from Violence in Teso.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The selected women who will be trained will spear head the documentation process of key stories from GBV survivors and they will form a team for SUV project at community level.
1- Stories on the causes of GBV, perpetrators arrests and legal provisions in the prohibition of violence law
2- Life based stories will be documented both using videos and audio for dissemination in radios and other social medias
3- Use of pictures to documents success and challenges of some women/survivors
In this way, after documentation of the stories TICFASO will hold a meeting with social media houses and negotiate for radio airtime for talk shows and spots. Such women will be brought to present their stories live in radios and TV stations especially NTV during news hours.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established or plan to establish that will contribute to the success of the project.
TICFASO Uganda will collaborate with a number of partners and stakeholders to ensure sucesfull implementation of this proposed project;
First TICFASO is spearheading implementation of partnership project on dissemination of GBV prohibition of violence law in Eastern Uganda, a project implemented by six partners (ActionAid, TPO, Shine Africa, Concerned Women Worldwide, Concern for Women Health Uganda and TICFASO Uganda)
Secondly, TICFASO will also collaborate with ISSIS-WICCE Uganda chapter that has vast experience in documenting incidents of violence against women and building capacity of womens groups to develop robust documentation processes for the project.
As a member of the UN subcluster on GBV, TICFASO will tap into exisiting synergies and goodwill among other like minded NGOs.
How many participants do you think will be trained in your project?
TICFASO will select 20 women to be trained in GBV social media campaign. These women will be selected from Katakwi district targeting 4 sub counties and a town council (4 women from usuk, 4 from Omodoi, 4 from Ongongoja, 4 from Ngariam and 4 from TC)
During the selection of 20 women, emphasis will be placed on nature of stories and child mothers will as well be targeted.
Describe which technologies, tools, and media you will focus on when training participants.
The project will employ the following technological approaches;
Selected women will be trained using Smartphone’s as a tool for behavior change model. Agreed upon text message format shall be used and format of display
Radio microphone check will be an approach that will build a self esteem of women to talk during radio talk shows, these women will be given chance to visit radio stations before talk shows.
Internet connection will also be thought of especially built under TICFASO website (ticfasofacebook.org) to disseminate information on GBV campaign.
Describe the facilities where you will hold the workshops.
The training of women will talk place in PEACE BUILDING CENTRE in Katakwi that is well resourced in terms of chairs, tables, access to water and food items. The Peace centre also has computers fully connected to internet and women can have access especially those who can read and write. This peace centre also video coverage, Cameras and public address system for community sensitizations. The project will basically pay for these things only.
What is your current relationship with the community with whom you plan to work? What makes you the most appropriate individual or organization to implement this project?
TICFASO is a community based organization and it has interacted with these communities for lone since 20004. Our approach of working with community support structures, building their capacity in different interventions has enabled us to develop strong linkages with such communities. A project on dissemination of Prohibition of violence law put TICFASO in the forefront of advocating for the rights of women especially fighting against GBV.
Due to frequent interactions with women within their communities, puts TICFASO as right organization to implement this project especially in enabling women who are survivors of violence to raise their voices to campaign for zero tolerance against GBV in communities. We have placed best technological approaches as we have women’ structures who are already
What specific challenges do you expect to face when planning and implementing your project?
Lack of transport especially for women from various sub counties that are distant from the Peace Building Centre for over 40 Km apart. TICFASO will use the GBV activist who have Bicycles to transport those women to the Peace Building Centre. TICFASO will hire one Taxi to transport women to come for radio talk shows after documentation of their stories.
Time management by women who are survivors since they are engaged in agricultural practices especially being wet session for farming, planting crops and roads may be damaged. TICFASO will organize the sessions that suit the timing especially after digging in the gardens, radio talk shows will be held in the evening because that is the time when people in Teso sit at home to listen to radios and no body is engaged to any work at that time.
How will you measure and evaluate the project’s impact, specifically: your primary participants, the wider regional community, or the global digital community?
TICFASO uganda intends to use a GBV capcity assesmnet tool that we have been using and docuement the areas of sucess. Our sucess aims in educating the more and more women and girls accross the area we work and end the lissues like domestic violence, child marriages and generally Gender Based Violence (GBV). For which we will cover the numbers of trainings conducted, our reach out and capture the success stories accross and share it live radios, News letters and vdio coverages. We shall also post the impact results in our website for the whole world to view and learn from it
