We get youths from different slums around Nairobi. We train them on how to do audio visual digital story making techniques. This will give them a platform and opportunity to learn how to tell their own stories and have a voice of their own. For some it will be a source of their daily bread. Bunge will be a platform where they can discuss issues affecting their communities. They will film the process and upload it on social media.

What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Nairobi
Describe the specific population with whom you will be working.
We shall work with people from informal settlements in Kenya. They have been neglected by both the mainstream media and social media. We want to work with them and give them a platform where they can air their views. Most of the youth in these areas are computer literate and those who are interested but lack the skills we shall train them.
Who else will be on your team to help implement the project?
http://www.nairobicommunitymediahouse.or.ke
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
We want to work with the informal settlements is to help them realise the millennium development goals. This will open up a campaign that will sensitise the communities and make them understand they too play an important role in realising the development goals alongside the development partners.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established or plan to establish that will contribute to the success of the project.
We have already established network with the communities around Nairobi since we are a community media. We have conducted a Bunge Mtaani previously and the response was successful.
How many participants do you think will be trained in your project?
This project can train up to 30 youth leaders, women leaders who will act as ambassadors of change.
They will be trained on digital story telling techniques and key being how to disseminate information down to the communities.
We shall provide them with incentives to cover their transport cost.
Describe which technologies, tools, and media you will focus on when training participants.
We shall focus on Digital story telling tools which is mostly audio visual tools. Our organisation is made up of a team that is well trained in media production. From pre production to post production. Communication is key when it comes to development. It is important for the communities to find their own voices and they can only do so when they get empowered.
Describe the facilities where you will hold the workshops.
We shall hire a hall that will accommodate the workshop. The internet connection will be WI FI. As a media house, we have enough computers that will cater for the training.
What is your current relationship with the community with whom you plan to work? What makes you the most appropriate individual or organization to implement this project?
Nairobi community media house relationship with the community is perfect. We have worked with them on key development issues and also started a web channel that broadcasts news around communities in Kenya.
What specific challenges do you expect to face when planning and implementing your project?
Attendance of the youth will be the key obstacle. Most of them are involved in criminal activities and it will be a process of rehabilitation of some sort to them. This is a challenge we are willing to take because so far we have managed to transform youths who were criminal gangs.
How will you measure and evaluate the project’s impact, specifically: your primary participants, the wider regional community, or the global digital community?
Success of the project will be felt on the ground foremost. This is where all the projects that will bring change will be implemented.
If your project were to be selected as a Rising Voices grantee, what would be the general timeline of project activities in 2014?
We could conduct similar workshops in six slums around Nairobi. The workshops could be done once in a particular slum for a week.
Detail a specific budget of up to $2,500 USD for operating costs.
