Lauro de Freitas (Bahia-Brazil) present urban violence because of drug trade. This situation compromise the social harmony and the living together, laid the citizen’s life on the line, especially of the more vulnerable group as young, black and suburbs people. In 2013 the city was the VIII Municipality for youth vulnerability to the violence. For that the Project want to help these teenagers to empowerment their history and their identity, through the creation of a video where all the community will be involved. They are the actors that can change their life.
Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Lauro de Freitas (Bahia)
Describe the specific population with whom you will be working.
They are young people 15/21 years old from lower class families, with a relative involved into illegal activities, that often abandoned the school to work in something unstable or to enter in the drug trade. Generally, the scholar desertion is a growing phenomenon in Brazil (36,5%, IBGE 2012), but is also more alarming in the suburbs and in the North-Est region. Because of these economic, social, educational and family difficulties, our target population, doesn’t have knowledge of their own origin and history, and, in the main, they don’t have a solid identity. Without an identity, for these adolescent is difficult to plan their future, to have a dream, to have a target to reach and to assert themself as a subject of their life and in the society.
Who else will be on your team to help implement the project?
To implement our Project we count on a multidisciplinary team set up with educators, psychology and TIC technician. Furthermore, to implement the Project we will count on the support of the community, especially of schools, families, churches, police, healthy centres. Just with the support of the community we can makeinterviews of quality.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Getting in touch with their origins, this young people could create an identity, and if they have an identity they can increase their self-esteem and they can empower their self, be citizen and demand their rights to improve their and their family’s life, and create a better society. Throughout interviews, collecting information, getting in touch with the community and their reality, we want to create a video where they can present the community and their personal history, talk about relationship between neighbours, the everyday life. Moreover, they will talk about their origins and recover their tradition most of all connected with the afro-Brazilian identity. Thanks to all this process their voice can be listening and they can take a protagonist in the society: Rising their voices
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established or plan to establish that will contribute to the success of the project.
Since 2010, the NGO ACMU is working in Lauro de Freitas with three Projects: CRC-Usina Digital, Virando o Jogo!, and Circuito do Saber. These Projects are working with young people, training and educating them in different areas as TIC, human rights, pedagogy, conflict mediation, entrepreneurialism and tourism. To find the Project’s participants we work in collaboration with the community’s schools, choosing students that will become knowledge’s multiplier and conflict’s mediator in the school and their community. We have an optimum relationship with the Government as we work together in the Projects. Finally we have a very good reputation with the families and in generally with the community for our job that try to turn away the young people form the drug trade.
How many participants do you think will be trained in your project?
We want to train 60 students, divided in two groups of 30 to facilitate the team’s work and the learning of each student.
Describe which technologies, tools, and media you will focus on when training participants.
To the Project development we will focus on the use of TIC. We will use Internet to prepare people and to show them example of interviews, how collecting information and getting in touch with the community. All the class are accompanied with a digital blackboard to make the teaching more interesting, multitasking and practical. During all the interviews’ process the people will use their mobile phone to report the work, taking pictures and making short shots. To make our final product, that will be a video, we’ll use a film camera and an editing program to produce our video. Finally we will use all the social networks and the web to promote our work.
Describe the facilities where you will hold the workshops.
The NGO ACMU count with some facilities that could help us in the development of this Project. For the lessons we will use the space of the ONG ACMU, where we have a classroom with 40 computers and one digital blackboard. We have an internet connection, Wi-FI access. Also, we count with a team of professionals in the area of TIC, education and pedagogy.
What is your current relationship with the community with whom you plan to work? What makes you the most appropriate individual or organization to implement this project?
Since 2010, we are working with adolescent from 15 to 21 years old in Lauro de Freitas, so for that reason our knowing about this population target and this area is able to develop this Project. We know that,in the beginning, sometimes it’s difficult to be accepted form the community, but ACMU is already pass this phase, and the citizenship have accepted the NGO’s work. We count with a multidisciplinary team that works in education and in TIC from more of 10 years and has a lot of experience with vulnerable population.
What specific challenges do you expect to face when planning and implementing your project?
We think that we can probably face with 3 challenges during the implementation of the Project. First it’s possible that a part of the community will not participate to the interview because they are busy or they don’t want to be recorded. Some of the students could have prejudices to some entity, for example to the Police, to the Municipal Organism, to some religious entity or to scholar location. Finally, is important to highlight that the security is a fragile theme in this territories. This could be a really challenges, because there are part of Vida Nova and Itinga (the two neighbourhoods where the Project will be setting) where the insecurity is very height. Also, a lot of time people from one neighbourhood can’t go to another neighbourhood for theme connected to the drug trade.
How will you measure and evaluate the project’s impact, specifically: your primary participants, the wider regional community, or the global digital community?
We’ll evaluate measuring the impact in our primary participant. We’ll consider the students’ assistance beside the entire Project and their really participation. Every participant (students and teachers) will make an evaluation, through a questionnaire, that’ll show the strong and the weak points, the personal interest, the abilities developed and the problems founded during the Project’s implementation. Finally, we’ll make a little interview to the community to know their considerations about our work. This evaluation will have a double intention: first, we’ll use that to realize the impact that these have to the students and the community, if throughout this we reach to weak-up a civil and social consciousness. We will use the evaluations to improve and get better our future Projects.
If your project were to be selected as a Rising Voices grantee, what would be the general timeline of project activities in 2014?
Training June–August.
Student’s selection: we count on students in vulnerability situation, from our Projects. With these students we will develop the Project. After that, we'll give classes of respect, self-consciousness, personal characteristic (pleasantness, working on shyness, public speaking), program organization, citizen’s rights, ethic value. All the classes will be accompanied with an educator and a psycologist and we will use TIC to the teaching.
Preparation of the Blog.
Field research, video’s production, video’s shoot and editing: September–October
In the second part we’ll divided the group in two: the first will make the field research in Itinga, and the second in Vida Nova. In the first group we put some Vida Nova students and viceversa; this because we want to push them to know the other and to broaden them’s horizons. Each student will have one of these functions: intreviews, collect information, video’s shoot, editing and take care of Project blog.

Besides the microgrant funding, what other support can Rising Voices provide for your project to ensure its success?
Rising Voices, like us, work with TIC so you could help us, beyond the microgrant funding, making publicity to our Project in this field. In this way the society of Bahia, and generally the international community, could learn about the situation of the community of Lauro de Freitas, particularly of the young people that have to leave in a violent society, with insufficient instrument for changing their lives and make a difference in the society. At the same time, the work of Raising voices could be knowed from Bahia community.

Very interesting proposal! With projects like this we lever up processes that put the neighborhood as a center of development, which I think is the future for our comm.unities
Good Project! Young people from Bahia suburbs need to know their origin and finally become a protagonist in the society.
Glad to hear that theres people trying to make this, a better world. I personally believe that in roder to do so, we nee to take advantage of the technology that science offers. Great idea
Projeto mais do que importante e necessário à população de Lauro de Freitas. Tomara ele possa ser executado com o máximo de apoio possível.
Rehabilitation projects for youth and adults should be supported unconditionally, social Organanizaciones and State Institutions are in the moral obligation to provide any support for projects created for this purpose and have positive impact for the good of these vulnerable groups.
It is a priority and a duty to ensure the welfare of others, the best thing that young people get involved in sustainable and rehabilitation proyects.
The social organizations, government and International aid agencies should work together to lower rates of poverty, domestic violence, crime, drugs
Proyects as presentd should be supported and put into practice sustaining them with th proposed resources.
