“Do Not Buy Stolen Property” is a project that aim to use citizen media to promote good citizenship and personal responsibility by discouraging the residents of Kisumu City from buying stolen goods or goods from questionable sources. The overall objective of this campaign is to discourage the involvement of young people in crime by reducing the number of channels through which they can convert stolen goods into cash.
Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
KISUMU
Describe the specific population with whom you will be working.
Most prolific young offenders see themselves as stealing not only to fulfill their own personal needs but also to service the wants and needs of others in their neighborhoods. Thus many young offenders see themselves as one person among many providing an essential, albeit criminal, service in supplying the wants of a bargain seeking general public.
The society is so hypocritical since it condemns and imprisons the thief (including large numbers of young/juvenile offenders) while it is the other adult citizens who regularly encourage and profit from the crimes. The adults themselves remain free and easy in the community. This project aims to communicate to the young people that crime is not good and also to the community not to indirectly encourage crime
Who else will be on your team to help implement the project?
Kenya Police
City of Kisumu
Kenya Prisons
Business Associations
Residents Associations
County Government of Kisumu

How many participants do you think will be trained in your project?
The project aims train about 500 direct participants and over 250,000 indirect participants
Describe which technologies, tools, and media you will focus on when training participants.
The Project shall majorly use digital video content to train participants on crime reduction strategies. However, a variety of other technologies shall be incorporated to ensure a wider audience is reached and the information decoded to the local level of understanding
Describe the facilities where you will hold the workshops.
All the workshops shall be held in public social halls. The local halls have electricity and thus YUSUD shall provide all the other relevant facilities including computers, projectors, temporary internet connections
What is your current relationship with the community with whom you plan to work? What makes you the most appropriate individual or organization to implement this project?
Since 2012, YUSUD has been conducting civic education on the implementation of the Constitution of Kenya at grassroots levels in Kisumu County under the Kenya National Integrated Civic Education (KNICE) funded by Ministry of Justie. YUSUD has been using Civic education in creating civic awareness, re-orienting the community spirit for the new dispensation and stimulating a robust public engagement in the implementation process of the constitution. To this end, YUSUD is committed in ensuring that the local residents are informed and empowered to own and exercise their rights and obligations under the Constitution
What specific challenges do you expect to face when planning and implementing your project?
Limitation of funds to be able to reach a wider target population is the main challenge. We hope to overcome this by lobbying for further support from the various stakeholders ad partners in the project.
How will you measure and evaluate the project’s impact, specifically: your primary participants, the wider regional community, or the global digital community?
The project success shall be mainly measured by the Percentage reduction in petty crime levels in Kisumu; The number of persons successfully reached with the media content; The Percentage reduction in incidences of youth/juvenile offenses
