Collect a large amount of used cooking oil, supplied by schools and restaurants of Bodoquena-MS/Brazil city and transform this residue into liquid or solid soap through a course provided for the local community. Alongside we offer blog, radio, signaling workshops, involving participants in a big campaign to raise the community’s enviroment awareness. It is intended to empower low-income people by providing an economic incentive (selling soap), thus also contributing so the oil is not disposed of incorrectly and invinting them to be multipliers of the enviromental message.

The project aims to promote environmental awareness in all schools and restaurants of this 8 thousand inhabitants city and to the public served by providing a free course for specific people from the Center of Social Assistance Reference, working with low-income families, particularly those dependent on grant and who are unemployed.

What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The soap workshop participants will also learn ho wto to post on the project blog, being stimulated to work on tutorials about how to make soap, publications about the benefits of reusing oil, publications about their life stories, possible improvements in their financial condition and usefulness of information related to recycling. The same content will be adapted for community radio.

The group that will apply this project was formed by another project that is strengthening a network of communicators from Pantanal and Serra da Bodoquena: ParaTudo project (www.paratudo.org.br). It is giving a jornalism course turned for ambiental and citizen issues for 88 person from 5 cities. It's executed by Fundação Neotrópica do Brasil (www.fundacaoneotropica.org.br) with a visibity support from O ECO site of ambiental journalism (www.oeco.com.br), which has a significant amount of visitors. Two of us areteachers in the schools. About the restaurantes, as a strategy to collect a significant amount of their used oil, we will propose to exchange it for vegetables produced in the community garden.
How many participants do you think will be trained in your project?
40 participants will be divided into two groups of 20 people. The Center of Social Assistance Reference, media through the local community radio and audio car will be ways to get the desired amount of people. Each participant who obtain 90% attendance and participation will be awarded the kit of assorted cleaning products produced through the oil at the end of the course.

- All the tools that can turn oil into soap, such as pots, spatulas, personal protective equipment and chemicals. The manufacturing techniques of soaps, shampoos, detergents, softeners and disinfectants are simple and therefore do not require sophisticated equipment

Describe the facilities where you will hold the workshops.
The “oil to soap” workshop space should be sufficient for the installation of equipment, storage of raw materials, finished products and other assistants and provide free to the proper sorting, cleaning and maintenance spaces materials. The communication workshops will happen in a Telecentro room, which is a place where the community can acess internet for free. The are 8 desktops with Windows system and ADLS connection.
We intend to count on the support the prefectureto borrow this location (physical space, ventilation, male and female bathroom to clean water and chilled water) for the proposed course.
What is your current relationship with the community with whom you plan to work? What makes you the most appropriate individual or organization to implement this project?
Some people from Ecommunicators of Bodoquena is already working in education with the public involving youth and adults and others work directly for programs that directly involve poorer, unemployed, with lack of stimulation and lack of motivation people. Upon this, arises this project's idea to meet this public in order to offer opportunities, knowledge and awareness that also benefits environment and generates some extra income to their budget.
What specific challenges do you expect to face when planning and implementing your project?
- Acceptance by the government about changing the used oil for the vegetables from the community garden;
– Support the prefecture by lending the location for the proposed course (physical space, lighting, ventilation, male and female bathroom, water for work, water to drink).
– Get time in the community radio schedule for a program about recycling and enviromental information
How will you measure and evaluate the project’s impact, specifically: your primary participants, the wider regional community, or the global digital community?
Conducting an ongoing evaluation of the entire group through positive feedbacks and public acceptance through the donation of oil and sale of products made from it in low prices.

A preocupação ambiental em relação ao destino final do produto (óleo de cozinha) de forma inadequada se torna muito claro nesse projeto. O presente projeto, propõe de forma nítida solução simples para a reciclagem desse óleo, levantando oportunidades de renda para a comunidade mais carente de Bodoquena.
