The current proposal refers to work with the rural youth about public communication made by the community, for the community. The objective is, to recapture the roots of their stories and to narrate these by audio podcasts and in the local radio as well as to encourage those young people to form a managing group of a communal radio, which is also responsible for the communication with Rising Voices. Realizing the activities using free software, we have the intention to instruct the recording techniques, the audio edition and the publication on internet.
Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Rubim
Describe the specific population with whom you will be working.
This proposal will be executed by the farmer youth of the settlement Jerusalém, community of Rubim MG, which is a member of the Movement of Rural Laborer Without Ground (MST – Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra). The young people will be participating as protagonists during the elaboration and execution of this proposal. Our motivation to realize such a project with exactly the youth of this settlement, is to provide the possibility of construction and co-participation during the activities in the community with a common effort, representing to such young people the opportunity to contribute with the local development, diminishing the depopulation of the rural, which is actually happening very often in Brasil.
Who else will be on your team to help implement the project?
Partners of this proposal:
Cáritas Diocesana de Almenara –caritasdiocesanadealmenara.blogspot.com;
Movement of Rural Laborer Without Ground (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra – MST) – www.mst.org.br;
The Community Council of Rubim MG
The Communal Association Borum – Baixo Jequitinhonha
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
In this proposal will be narrated the history of the population by the population itself, which constructed the history thru lots of fights and sufferings. The settlement Jerusalém emerged out of the popular organization of different farmers without land. Insisting on their rights, they occupied an unproductive large landowning and realized the Agricultural Reform, which is legal in the view of the federal government. Thereby the young persons will be motivated to recapture the story by the reports of the oldest residents, and the reconstruction with help of different audio tools implementing interviews in the local community, building spots and programs, and planing the realization of those in the local radio.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established or plan to establish that will contribute to the success of the project.
- The realization of productive projects to fortify the alternative agriculture in the settlement of Jerusalém since its founding. Jerusalém is an historical partner of our organization.
– The deciding partnership for the realization of the project must be made with the group of the young locals, who already are generating some interventions in the community, and are very interested in managing a communal radio to make visible their actions.
– Cáritas Diocesana of Almenara is part of the Administration Counsel of Radio Santa Cruz AM, which is an important communication tool in this region reaching about 20 communities.
How many participants do you think will be trained in your project?
About 80 kids and teenagers are living in the settlement Jerusalém, and are the specific population we will be working with in our project. We count on elaborating the different topics, respecting the different age ranges assigning responsibilities of co-managing and participation. In return Cáritas Diocesana de Almenara will be providing the transport to the local, the meals during the days of training, further the printed folders of the didactic materials, which will help the young people realize their training in a continuous way.
Describe which technologies, tools, and media you will focus on when training participants.
The training meetings will include technical and political contents concerning the public communication. We will be realizing practical activities about how to lead through an interview, how to handle a digital voice recorder and how to download the recordings to the computer, about audio edition and how to create a program for the communal radio. The training will be realized by a team of the Cáritas Diocesana de Almenara, which is promoting the creation of communal radios in the region since over 10 years. The use of the radio as a tool to diffuse informations is due to the fact, that internet is still poorly disseminated and the lack of public policy favoring such a democratization. That is why radio is still the most popular way of communication in Brazil.
Describe the facilities where you will hold the workshops.
The workshop will take place in the settlement Jerusalém, in the rural zone of the city of Rubim MG, equipped with:
– Meeting room with capacity for 50 persons
– 1 toilet for each m/f
– 1 kitchen
– 1 computer without internet
– there will be 1 notebook provided by Cáritas Diocesana de Almenara for the realization of the audio editions.
What is your current relationship with the community with whom you plan to work? What makes you the most appropriate individual or organization to implement this project?
Being partners for more than 10 years now, Cáritas Diocesana de Almenara is executing continuous work in the settlement Jerusalém and is actually implementing a construction project of cisterns for rainwater collection, also for human consummation as for the production of food. We have also worked in the community with projects of recovering and valuing the native seeds, with practice of how to handle soil and water in an agro-ecological way. The public communication (first of all through communal radios) is a continuity of all the projects realized until now, wherein we are aware of the importance of this medium, not only as a tool for information but also as a way for education and communal unity.
What specific challenges do you expect to face when planning and implementing your project?
- Arouse the attention and curiosity of the young people, generating playful activities and topics assembled by the involved.
– Construct a shared leadership where everyone has rights and duties without distinctions, promoting the division in working groups realizing a circuit of the tasks
– Take into account the activities at school, keeping in touch directly with the pedagogical coordinator of the local school
– Contribute to the democratization of access to communication in its different dimensions
– Adjustment of the documentation for the creation of the communal radio.
How will you measure and evaluate the project’s impact, specifically: your primary participants, the wider regional community, or the global digital community?
We will be realizing evaluations every five months with the target group. To evaluate the impacts of the activities in the local community, we will be realizing researches about the opinions with objective questions focussing on the verification of the audience of our programs, the treated topics and the relationship between the community and the contents. The evaluations concerning the global community will be figured out with the number of accesses on the blog and the number of downloads on the feed of audio podcasts. The achievement of the objectives of this proposal will be accomplished when the young people will be suitable to manage and execute programs in the local communal radio, respecting the principles of freedom of speech, participation, and the right of communication.

Besides the microgrant funding, what other support can Rising Voices provide for your project to ensure its success?
Building partnerships and the fortification of networking, is what have been facilitated by internet. The connection of similar experiences happening in completely different places puts out a great diversity of information and know-how, especially for the involved young people, but also for the teachers learning and relearning along with the youth all the time. If this project will be selected, your support will be very helpful already. You could contribute more, helping to get such networking possibilities, allowing the youth of Brasil to get in touch with other young people around the world making similar experiences. You’d help us breaking up with the isolation that is actually suffocating our rural communities, cut of from the world, being a hostage of the mass communication.

This is an interesting project that aims to empower rural youths. They are often unheard and as I grew up in rural areas I know how important it is. This will enable them to realize their worth and participation in society.
Hello! Thanks for commenting … this is exactly the idea, making visible the invisible society! big hug
