Proposals South Africa from April, 2014
South Africa: Lalelani (Listen to Us)
We run a youth empowerment project called Game Changers which aims to provide a group of unemployed youth with skills to help them gain employment. These young people come from a township where having a stable job is a rarity and any job opening in their area receives thousands of applications. This is not a story just true of our young people here in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg but of young people across South Africa. We would like their voices and experiences to be heard through a video blogging program that will initially focus on what it is like to be young and unemployed in South Africa.
South Africa: The Save Earth, Blog Earth Project
The project would introduce and encourage student participation on an environmental protection social networking platform called the Tunza eco-generation through: 1. Environmental outreaches to selected schools in Pretoria to educate students on protecting the environment and offer training on accessing the Tunza eco-generation platform. 2. Training of dedicated environmental bloggers for each school on reporting the environmental activities of their schools and communities weekly. Awards would be given to the best environmental bloggers over a number of months at a ceremony.

DeafNET is a world class network of knowledge and expertise in the interest of people who experience deafness and related communication barriers on the continent of Africa. Techniques like subtitling & narration will be taught to empower them with video as a means of communication across the Deaf boundaries. Those who are deaf, who were not able to write, can now also communicate/express themselves with video.

The history of the !Xun and Khwe community over the past 60 years speaks of a traumatised and displaced people: From hunter-gatherer to sought after soldier of high acclaim, to willing seasonal farm laborer to impoverished landowner confined in military camps at Platfontein near Kimberley – South Africa). The FirstNation project I'm proposing is to train !Xun and Khwe community citizen journalists in blogging, YouTube and social media tools.
