The project is conceived as a apacity-building initiative for students on positive use of new media and social networking tools. The project seeks to mobilise marginalised platforms of students for peaceful engagements, through positive communication. The aim is to nurture vanguard of youth movements commited to online activities in academic environment with positive bearing on non-violent changes at national, regional and global levels.

Project targets five campuses of academic institutions in Lagos, Nigeria with combined estimated student population of over 300,000. Despite growing popularity of online communication on campuses, overwhelming active population of students organised under some platforms with non-violenct objectives lack appropriate information and capacities for new media tools in propagating groups’ ideals and thereby remain underrepresented in online community.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Citizen media envisioned under the project will give adequate medium of expression to hitherto unheard voices for non-violent engagements for peaceful changes on campuses. Content of stories and news items will bring true life experience and vivid account of events to bear on imperatives on constructive engagements for peaceful changes for a better world. Content will capture live stories, pictorial accounts, role-plays, drama and presentations.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
Previous peacebuilding activities of our organisation have enlisted participation of few students from the academic institutions i.e. (a) University of Lagos, (b) Lagos state University, (c) Lagos state Polytechnic, (d) Yaba College of Technology and (e) Federal College of Education targetted for the project. Our organisation relate with existing platforms in these institutions in assssing in conflict situation.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
Fifty (50) participants will be trained under the project. Invitation for participation will be made open in online media and circulated on campuses. Participants will persuaded by opportunity of sharing experiences and ideals with global audience. Interest of more prospective participants will be aroused by the positive impacts of project activities on inter-personal relationships, communal harmony, national integartion and global understanding.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
Additional support would be needed in the areas of exposure to requisite trainings and internships for institutional capacity building. Project implementation would benefit from frequent contacts and exchanges with organisations and groups working or interacting on the platform of Rising Voices provides which provides opportunity for assessment and evaluation mechanisms.
