Every hour and twenty minutes a person dies in Honduras. The murder rate is 85.5 per 100,000 inhabitants and many of them are young people. Working in collaboration with Jovenes Contra La Violencia, Conexihon and USAID we will launch an investigative reporting series that will air on State channel 8 and a cable channel. This 5-part series will focus on analysis, the causes and impact of violence against youth and potential solutions.

Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
Youth in the country, especially in urban areas, are in crisis – unemployment is skyrocketing, gangs and drug trafficking disproportionately affect youth, and hundreds migrate to the U.S. daily in search of work or fleeing violence – a total of 940 children and youth (108 girls, 832 boys) were killed this year, or 13 percent. We will be training and working with youth ages 16 – 30 in urban areas.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The five segments will be 50-minutes long and will include in-depth reporting, interviews and reporting that will be led by Conexihon, a local nonprofit of professional investigative reporters promoting the defense of human rights, freedom of expression, transparency and access to public information in Honduras, working in partnership with Jovenes Contra La Violencia and HablaHonduras. Text messaging will be used during the show to poll opinions.

We have secured the use of the public television channel and a cable channel to air the series.
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
We will be working closely with Jovenes Contra La Violencia (JCV) Honduras, USAID and Conexihon. JCV is a Central America group of youth volunteers doing civic work to reduce violence and its impact on youth. In February we conducted one day-long journalism bootcamp with the JCV Honduras chapter in collaboration with Conexihon. From that training we got the idea to do this 5-part series.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
We will work with the 15 youth who are part of the T.V. production team of Jovenes Contra la Violencia. JCV has a network of 1500 young volunteers all over the country and a large viewership among youth. The series could easily be made available to where all the youth work as a way to teach about violence, it's root causes, its impact and how to create solutions. This is part of a larger vision of creation a solutions-journalism model in Honduras
