The project involves forming a group of marginalised IP children and youth and training them to promote and preserve their native culture. The project will facilitate the production of online content that will be shared to a broader audience using citizen media tools. The project will also contribute to the scaling up of the initiative with the women (mothers) thereby further strengthening its impact and maximising resources for optimum results.
Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Sitio T'nuos, Barangay Takunel, Municipality of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
The project will partner with children and youth belonging to an indigenous group and living in one of the most impoverished areas in the Philippines. Extreme poverty has made them vulnerable to exploitative practices including unfair labour practices. This project will allow them to engage in artistic pursuits that they can share online, where they do not have a presence yet, and which can be a potential income-generating activity in the future.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The participants will produce online materials showcasing their culture (songs, dances, musical instruments, costumes, among others). These materials will be shared using citizen media tools (podcasts, online photos and videos, and blogs). The online presence will enable a larger audience to have a glimpse of a marginalised group with a rich culture contributing to its preservation and also creating a deeper appreciation of other cultures.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
Participants are children of the women organised by the proponent to engage in a livelihood concern to help alleviate widespread poverty in the community hence it will also serve as a scaling-up of this collaboration. In the future, a more formal collaboration with the relevant institutions will be worked out to sustain the activities and ensure that the fundamental objective of preserving and promoting local culture is guaranteed.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
The project will initially work with at least 20 children and youth. They will be divided into smaller groups and trained according to their interests and talents. Leveraging on their inherent skills is aimed at sustaining their interest and ensuring their participation in the activities. There will also be activities common to everyone to underscore the values of cooperation and collaboration thereby strengthening group dynamism.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
Additional support from Rising Voices may be in the form of assistance in finding other ways of promoting the online content that has been produced. Another support may also be through referrals to other institutions to help us scale up and replicate the project in other areas. Technical support will also be valuable in light of the shifting nature of technology trends.
