The project will use digital video to document and prod cast daily life experiences of rural children on micro-blogs and social network. The purpose of the project is to send out a message on the social, economic and cultural issues affecting rural children and also be able to solicit for innovative ways from around the globe on how to address challenges of early childhood development in rural Manafwa , Uganda.
Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Manafwa District
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
The project will work with rural schooling/non-schooling children between the age of 5 and 14 years old. Rural children lack technical knowledge and capacity to access and interact with the online population, yet those who would be in position to tell their stories have largely focused on the urban street child. Documenting and sharing the daily experiences of these children will expose their concerns and attract attention from stakeholders.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
News and stories will focus on: What makes up a rural child’s day; Life Aspirations of rural children; challenges that rural children encounter as they strive to achieve their life aspirations; how the daily life of their parents/mother’s impacts on the child’s daily life and early development; copying mechanisms of rural children; stories about how the project (through training) has empowered and transformed these rural children in Manafwa.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
This project is an initiative of the ‘Foundation for Early Childhood Development Uganda’ (FECDU). FECDU is a community based organisation that trains and educates teachers and community members in early childhood development. Student teachers at the foundation, thus, work closely with schools, parents and children in the community. This growing network between FECDU and the community will ensure that the project is successful and sustainable
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
Initially five (5) student teachers at the FECDU and five (5) children from the community will be trained in computer literacy, internet, blogging, film making and social networking. The 10 trained teachers and children will then document and broadcast life stories of two children every week on facebook and project blog. Training of five (5) school and community children every month and online story telling will continue during the project.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
We would appreciate if Rising Voices can provide two computers to be added to the two computers that the Foundation for Early Childhood Development is currently using at its resources center. A one year internet subscription contribution from Rising Voice will also very much be appreciated. Rising Voice can also connect us with other organisations working on children's development issues so that we can share our stories and exchange ideas
