The Shangaan have been underrepresented in Zimbabwe as a minority group that inhabit the remotest side of the south-eastern Lowveld of Zimbabwe. Their cultural norms and values have been subject to criticism, viewed as backward and conservative. Their language over the years could not be included in the educational carricular. Through lobbying for representation, they have now received a significant representation in politics and economics.

What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Chiredzi
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
The Shangaan minority group is our target group. Online they are underrepresented because they are located very far away from the vicinity of social amenities, recent technological advancements and globalisation. We want to work with them because isolating them is an outright infringement of basic fundamental human rights. The male circumcision in Zimbabwe began with the Shangaan as a cultural component but has received world attention in HIV
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
News of how and why they have been peripheralised, marginalised and looked down upon as second class citizens. How have they managed to undergo such a transition and gain recognition in Zimbabwe. News of how they managed to penetrate the academic circles and make their language official and encorporate it in the country's educational carricular. Digital video will be the most suitable media output that will be created by the participants.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
Our organisation has already engaged traditional leadership of the Shangaan for easy interviewing and documentation of their stories and best practices. We have also established networks with other NGOs and relevant government line ministries so as to work collaboratively for the common cause of amplifying the voice of once voiceless community. Media and publishing houses are our future proposed partnerships to give the Shangaan enough media grip
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
We need to train about forty(40) participants. Through community engagement in beneficiary identification we shall mobilise community leadership to identify representatives of their own choice and submit them for training.Sustainability during participation will be shared. Some of the financial resources will come from the proposed grant and the other percentage comes from already existing coffers of the organisation.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
Besides the microgrant funding, Rising Voices can provide technical resources such as a projector to be used during trainings. Production of quality IEC material like brochures, pamphlets and magazines that document the findings about the Shangaan cultural heritage and phases of their radical transformation from seclusion to inclusion in national affairs. Publishing of the findins by Rising Voices can ensure the success of the project .
