This project aims at creating an interactive map that pinpoints the too widely scattered community development projects in Cuba. It will contain basic information of each one and the description of its activities through short videos and photo galleries made by journalism students of the University of Havana as part of their training to cover local stories.
Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
La Habana
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
Cuban community development projects do not have visibility at all on the web. Being on Internet would allow them to establish cooperation relationships among themselves and make their work visible outside the country to agencies, individuals, media, etc. A previous teaching experience identified more than 80 of these community projects in the capital of Cuba. We will be working, in this phase, with these projects and 60 students of journalism.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
Content to be developed on the site will be based on an interactive map that will contain an article with a summary of key project data: name, coordinator, direction, mission, vision and core activities. Also we will include a creative video or photo gallery, made jointly by students and citizens involved in the projects. It will also be disseminated in social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and Youtube.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
This project has been approved by the Departament of Journalism at the University of Havana. We have also been working with the Exchange and Reference Center for Community Inintiatives (CIERIC by its Spanish acronym) in the identification of community projects in three provinces of Cuba: La Habana, Artemisa and Pinar del Río which do not have web presence.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
We will prepare 60 journalism students through their curriculum. This includes developing skills on image processing on the web, creating videos and podcasts. They will carry out this work as evaluation of Hypermedia Journalism class. Participants in community projects will be assessed by the students in order to create end communication products.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
Rising Voices could help us making the payment for hosting and domain for our site, which we cannot do from Cuba. In addition, we would appreciate your help in training the group of professors who actually teach this subject at the University of Havana. Also the diffusion of our project in your website would be greatly appreciated .

Interesting project. I have seen the work done by the students and the coordination team, and this could make a direct and useful impact on the promotion of social and local projects in Cuba. Well needed!
Thanks a lot Iroko… Count you on the team !!! We will need as much help as possible to do this 🙂
This project can change the map of community communication in Cuba, make visible to those working in neighborhoods and mobilize many people about new ways of communicating.
This project would also help to people who have never seen the Internet in Cuba could find sources of funding or support for their community projects through a simple presence on the web …
muy buena la idea la verdad, ojala que triunfe en la lid esta propuesta porque vendria de mucha ayuda
Go on!
Great project… Hope you guys win !!! Cuba rocks 🙂
Best,
Dayana
Great project!
I think this is a great project that will yield many great insights into the process of community development. Because development is a process, rather than just a set of discreet outcomes, it’s important that the winding roads that lead to a community development project be well documented. Getting to know how Cuban communities “do” development will illuminate many scholars and practitioners across the globe and surely begin rich conversations that could lead to transformative outcomes.
Thanks Deepak,
It means a lot to us that you write such a beautiful words !!! Hope you could help us if we win !
Best,
E
This is a great opportunity both from the new generation of Cuban journalists to really learn the ropes of their profession while giving voice to the communities throughout the country…Great work!!!
I think it’s a really usefull project. Those young jornalism students are very talented, just need to materialize their hopes. Winning this could help them very much…
