PhotoVoice – a look at one community through its children’s eyes seeks to teach learners to use photography as a means of self-expression and advocacy.Learners will be taught to create own personalized PhotoVoice journals that provides a framework for documenting and practicing technical elements of photography, making decisions about who or what to photograph, and expressing personal thoughts, feelings, and stories about the images taken.

Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
This project seeks to work with underprivileged children of Limpopo province, one of the poorest regions of South Africa through PhotoVoice the idea being to expose disadvantaged children to ICTs including camera usage, and editing software. This methodology also seeks to help children convey their experiences, needs and aspirations and to mobilize adults—and especially men—to meet their urgent specific needs.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The vision is to come up with journals to depict children's day to day lives—their accomplishments, hopes, joys and challenges as well as their perceptions of adults, their understanding of gender and HIV/AIDS and their experiences with service delivery, with school, and sometimes with illness, abuse and hunger.Experiences will be shared with friends, family members and local radio stations. Bloggers will also help sharing these online.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
Strategic relationships will be established with local schools, principals and community authorities including Limpopo Municipality, community based organisations, UNICEF and UNHCR. Local bloggers and community radio stations will to help raise awareness and generating radio dialogues in addressing urgent specific needs of children. A local computer library will be identified to act as a communications and training studio for children.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
Throughout the course of the project, two groups of 20 learners will trained in technical photography skills, writing and story development, project planning, and documentation. Learner participants will first identify areas from their own lives that they wanted to explore or to draw attention to, then use skills learned to tell stories about their experiences within those areas. Disposal cameras will be given to each participant.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
Continued technical support and mentoring will be greatly appreciated throughout the project. Rising Voices can also assist in linking this project to other similar projects to help create a culture of learning and sharing of innovative ideas on ICTs and social media in articulating and presenting diversity. This project should grow and should continue after the grant and would be great to continue receiving support and ideas from Rising Voices.
