Topical focus:
Country:
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Soroti
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
The project will work with children aged between 10-17 years within Soroti Municipality. This category usually does not have access to Computer based services such as internet. They also do not have access to relevant information on issues that affect them. We would like to work with them to create awareness through social media on issues that affects their well-being. We intend to install five more computers with unlimited internet access.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
We envision stories that tell the truth and depict the circumstances of those that tell them. Participating children will be trained & equipped with skills on how to tell their own stories through the use of social media like face book, twitter & skype. We anticipate children to tell stories that relate to their sexuality, abuses, domestic violence, corruption, discrimination etc & how these affects their well-being as children especially girls.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
We intend to establish working relations with media houses in Soroti, Printers, public Libraries; Uganda Communications Association; Community Development Offices, and child welfare associations, schools and District Education Department. We will also work with mobile telecommunications companies and other internet service providers in the project area.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
150 Primary school children; 50 Primary School Teachers; 150 out of school children including 150 adults within the community (100 women and 50 men). A larger number of women is preferred because it is believed in the African community that if you educate a woman, you educate a nation, if you educate a man, you educate an individual. Initially, a total number of 600 people will be trained.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
Besides the micro-grant funding, we expect Rising Voices to support us by providing technical assistance in terms of training and equipping our staff to deliver expert skills to the target beneficiaries of the project. We also need Volunteers to come and participate in various development activities within the organization. Rising voices will also support us in achieving our vision by posting stories told by our children in their website.
