Snow Rural Community Development is proposing to implement a project that will target the youth in Kasese district focusing on those that stay and live in the rural area by giving them skills and knowledge on how to capture stories, community needs, lessons and experiences of the rural people and share the information through the media by partnering with the local radio stations. The proposed project will support the rural unemployed youth to promote the right to communication and technology. After sharing the stories through the media it will be an opportunity for community development.
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Describe the specific population with whom you will be working.
The proposed project was designed hand in hand with the community youth after a strong evidence that rural people have information that are not shared through the media this has constrained them from accessing external support to solve their community problems. The rural youth committed themselves to move home to home while sharing and documenting stories, lessons and experiences of the local rural people and the information will be shared over the local radio stations and the social media. The proposed project will target the rural poor, rural school children and their teachers, children out of school, the youth, rural women and the people infected and affected with HIV/AIDS, cancer, Hepatitis B. The proposed project will work hand in hand with graduates in Mass Communication.
Who else will be on your team to help implement the project?
Foundation for Community Development and Empowerment (FCDE),
International Service Learning Alliance (ISLA)
Community Local Leaders
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The vision of the content is “The voices of rural poor people heard and integrated in decision making”. The kind of news that will be collected and expected issues about domestic violence, child abuse, land conflicts, environmental project, health, education of children and the government laws and programs that target the poor rural people. The stories will base on the real situation of the rural poor people like the individual stories, households, children stories and stories on about economic opportunities, food security and promotion of good hygiene and sanitation.
What technologies and digital tools do you plan to use in the trainings?
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established or plan to establish that will contribute to the success of the project.
Snow Rural in 2013 signed a memorandum of understanding with Foundation for Community Development and Empowerment (FCDE). The Foundation is building the capacity of Snow Rural on top of that FCDE established a resource center that is promoting social media. therefore Snow Rural will work hand in hand with FCDE in ensuring that the proposed project is successful. Additionally FCDE has introduced another program of International Service Learning Alliance (ISLA) https://www.facebook.com/ISLA.international?ref=br_tf
How many participants do you think will be trained in your project?
The proposed project will train 15 youth from the three Sub Counties. Snow Rural will partner with the local radio stations and an information Station will be established where the youth will be gathering the information, edit and share it over the media.
Since the project will pass the skills to young people the trainees will pass the skills gained to the rest of the community youth hence leading increased numbers.
Describe which technologies, tools, and media you will focus on when training participants.
The training content will focus on recording data, photographing, using mobile phone internet, developing drama using community case stories.
Currently the organization has experienced staff in computer and conducting community needs assessment, community mapping and stakeholders analysis. Mobile phones technology is the most appropriate because the local people have some knowledge in using mobile phones than computers however one Laptop will be procured to act as server.
Describe the facilities where you will hold the workshops.
The workshops will conducted with the organization partner Foundation for community development and empowerment, because they have a projector that will be used during workshop presentation, they have local internet network, 8 Laptops and 3 modems.
What is your current relationship with the community with whom you plan to work? What makes you the most appropriate individual or organization to implement this project?
