The initiative aims to boost www.kemok.com a online platform to democratize the right to freedom of expression of indigenous peoples in Guatemala, making use of the Castilian language, Xinka, Garifuna and the 22 Mayan languages. The project will provide training opportunities, using the methodology for trainers in the use of digital tools to provide feedback on the virtual platform with the idea of constantly updating the content. After receiving the training, beneficiaries using the same methodology for trainers, they replicate the the knowledge acquired in their respective communities.

For this to 75 women and men representatives of indigenous organizations in each of the 22 Mayan peoples, as well as social actors in the Garifuna peoples, Afro-descendants and Xinka to participate in 7 intensive workshops and virtual mode of will be identified developing skills in the use of social media, digital photography and video, blogs and digital tools offered by the virtual world.
Participants will learn how to record, edit and upload content audio, photography, video, and manage social networking accounts, as fundamental elements to appropriate the right to freedom of expression on the Internet. The workshops will be held at the headquarters of indigenous organizations located in cities, according to the geographical distribution of indigenous communities.

The connections and inter-institutional coordination that have been established to ensure the success of this initiative from the perspective of the indigenous peoples of Guatemala, have allowed the creation of the initial proposal of the virtual platform www.kemok.com mainly the leaders of the organizations: Academy of Mayan Languages of Guatemala ALMG; Ak ‘Tenamit Association; Association of Women Junajil; Black Organization of Guatemala ONEGUA; Network Studies Q'eqchi’ (USA).

How many participants do you think will be trained in your project?
The project aims to identify and train 3 gender equality representatives of the 25 villages that exist in Guatemala, for a total of 75 women and men representatives of indigenous organizations.

Describe which technologies, tools, and media you will focus on when training participants.
Participants will learn how to record, edit and upload content audio, photography, video, and manage social networking accounts, as fundamental elements to appropriate the right to freedom of expression on the on the Internet, promoting the use of smartphones and laptops with wireless technology Wi Fi and a multimedia projector and internet access via modem with a smart phone to develop and virtual training. Participants and representatives of indigenous organizations have the opportunity to learn and expand their knowledge in the use of computers in Windows environment and Internet tools, and explore and optimize the use of smart phones. They will also learn to use social networking sites Face book, Twitter, Skype, BlogSpot, Word press and other virtual platforms.
Describe the facilities where you will hold the workshops.
The project is referred to perform 6 classroom workshops and 1 virtual workshop. Classroom workshops will be held at the headquarters of the indigenous organizations or failing in the town hall of each of the cities where they have raised the training events. The project has seen the acquisition of one smartphone, 1 laptop with wireless technology Wi Fi, 1 Multimedia Projector to develop and virtual training, because the indigenous organizations do not have such equipment by high costs thereof. In each of the venues, participants and representatives of indigenous organizations will be organized in working groups of 3 persons to provide the minimum system (1 smartphone and 1 laptop) that will be used for the practices during training workshops.
What is your current relationship with the community with whom you plan to work? What makes you the most appropriate individual or organization to implement this project?
The Project Coordinator and the coordination team formed an interdisciplinary block with extensive experience in indigenous issues also are active members of the Academy of Mayan Languages of Guatemala and several of them have worked in the Linguistic Communities Q'eqchi ‘ and Mopan, and to establish a working relationship and coordination in the last 10 years. The members of the coordination team have deployed a wide outreach work with indigenous organizations in the country, as well as participating in national and international projects focused on the indigenous peoples of Guatemala cooperation. The project management team expects you follow virtual platform www.kemok.com project beyond the period of funding requested, to achieve and compared with online media internationally.
What specific challenges do you expect to face when planning and implementing your project?
During project implementation, it is likely that some representatives of indigenous organizations fail to achieve minimum system (1 smartphone and 1 laptop with wireless technology Wi Fi) to be used for the necessary practical workshops during training, then, due to lack of access to their own computers, there may be difficulty in consolidating learning. For this reason, it is contemplated organizing groups of 3 people working together to provide and deploy their best efforts to find equipment.
The coordination team is responsible for providing access to computers in internet centers or schools that have the necessary computer equipment; this will make the necessary arrangements to apply for use of the facilities provided in coordination with indigenous organizations.
How will you measure and evaluate the project’s impact, specifically: your primary participants, the wider regional community, or the global digital community?
The coordination team will measure and evaluate the impact of project activities, based on the general criteria. At project completion:
75 representatives of indigenous organizations attended and actively participated in the training workshops.
90% representatives of indigenous organizations have the ability to interact in social networks and use digital tools to create audio content, video and photography.
The main indigenous organizations active in Guatemala updating content for the virtual platform www.kemok.com expected functions smoothly.
Representatives of indigenous organizations appropriate the project and replicate the knowledge acquired in their home communities.
Gradually increase the followers of the virtual platform www.kemok.com throug social networks.
