Finalist – Palau: Youth-In-Conservation Exchange Network

This project aims to empower the Palau youth who are involved in conservation by training them on communications and outreach strategies to promote environmental conservation in Palau, and develop an online social network to engage their peers around the world to share, learn, and support their campaign and amplify their Palauan voice in the global community.

Finalist – Peru: My Community Voices

To train rural settlers in the southern districts of Puno in the use of the media via Internet to document their culture, history and own news through blogs that include multimedia content, thus overcoming the digital divide (giving it a sense of technology) and the development divide, themselves creating their own presence on the Internet. This in a one-week workshop in the city of Puno, followed by an accompanying one for all participants so that they continue publishing their news and documentaries.

Finalist – Nigeria: Addressing Iwerekhan Environmental Concerns with Social Media

With the long history of oil extraction in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria and the environmental pollution and loss of livelihoods this instigates, documentation of impacts as experienced by the local people has become very necessary. We see a profound opportunity to harness the social media platforms for training/Workshops giving a voice to the marginalized Niger Delta communities and to push oil companies & government to be transparent in their dealings with them.This project seeks to harness the social media phenomenon to give a voice to these historically marginalized people in the society

Finalist – Mexico: Jko'ponik (Our voice)

This project aims to contribute to the strengthening and preservation of Tsotsil language, through the articulation of a group of young tsotsil artists who, through podcasts, share their experiences, knowledge, concerns and opinions, which can be shared through local radio systems and of course, internet. Everyone is an expert in their own native tongue. Therefore, it is very important to actively involve tsotsil young people in this process. The goal is not only to preserve this language, but help to find new paths for its evolution in this century: that's why is a living language.

Finalist – Fiji: Tukuni Yadua (Talking about Yadua)

Enable the indigenous community of Denimanu to share their stories which span 40 years of effort to protect Fiji's endangered Crested Iguanas; their challenges, successes and joys; and their resilience in mitigating impacts of climate change in their village and livelihoods. Through digital imagery take a “boat ride in open waters” or “walk” around the village with them and experience their unique biodiversity, culture and people. Train village youths in compiling digital videos, photographs & oral history and to conduct historical mapping of their natural resources for future planning.

Finalist – Bhutan: E-ngage Youth

The Project will create an increased awareness on media literacy amongst the school going youth and high school dropouts, who reside at Changjiji Housing Complex by conducting a series of media literacy/engagement classes. A local media expert will conduct photojournalism, digital storytelling and video-blogging classes. Through this training we hope that the youth will not only gain an understanding of how media functions, but also get their voices heard and be a part of our democratic processes.

Finalist – Zimbabwe: Promoting Citizen Journalism in Chitungwiza

We have initiated an online news platform with URL http://www.chitownews.com. The platform uses the concept of citizen reporting whereby citizens play an active role in the gathering, documenting and disseminating of news and events occurring in their communities. We therefore seek to promote the concept of citizen journalism/reporting among the young generation of Chitungwiza. This will be done through training and skills development workshops to sharpen their awareness on the concept of citizen reporting, new media and use of digital tools in amplifying their voices.

Finalist – Mexico: The Mayan Voices of Popolá

Register the oral tradition capturing in image & video the daily life of Popolá, Mayan community of Valladolid, Mexico. Empowering children & adolescents in the use of a voice recorder & digital camera also train them in the use of free software to edit audios, images & videos that they capture. Create a blog, accounts on Twitter, YouTube, Flickr & Facebook to upload multimedia content creation. The goal is to raise 50 videos, 50 audio & 50 photos at least the duration of the project. Empowering people responsible for managing the accounts after after the completion of the financing.

Finalist – Cambodia: Bunong Ancient Myths and New Ideas

The Mondulkiri Resource and Documentation Centre (MRDC) has been active in the mountainous indigenous populated province of Mondulkiri, Cambodia in collecting, organizing and making available all data and information about the province and especially its main ethnic group, the Bunong. This project aims to continue this work by training young Bunong volunteers in producing locally-made films related to the past and present Bunong culture and on broadcasting them through social media tools developed for the global community and mobile phones for the local communities.

Finalist – Kenya: WOES -Walking On Egg Shells

WOES-Walking On Egg Shells is an initiative that seeks to promote progressive re-integration of ex-prisoners in their communities through micro-blogging that will highlight their struggles to fit in the community.This micro-blogs will unravel the journey from the first day they were released from prison in an effort to confront stigma, bring about acceptance and to avoid the situation whereby they feel like they are walking on eggs shells because every one looks at them suspiciously once they know that they were once offenders.
