This project wants to train transgender people who join in Muslim transgender community to use digital media to gain awareness that you could be transgender and serve Allah (God). It enables them to create blogs and short documentary about how they practice Islam as a transgender and how they experience and tackle negative stereotypes from Muslim neighborhood. It is expected to leverage understanding that being LGBTQ is compatible with Islam
What locality or neighborhood will your project focus on?
Describe the specific community with whom you will be working.
Muslim transgender community doesn't have sufficient representation on the on-line media in Indonesia. Living in the largest Muslim country, transgender people's freedom of expression has been suppressed by religious groups making advocacy to their rights is hard. Different from other LGBTQ groups, muslim transgender community has regular religious meeting and learn Islam from a perspective of minority group.
What kinds of news, stories and other content will be created?
The blogs will combine text and audio-visual message to tell public about this community and show them different reality of Islam. Although negative stereotype toward transgender is still high, indeed there are groups that serve Allah from an alternative angle which completely different from majority does. Then, it will combined a documentary film telling how they practice it and what they expect people want to know about Islam and transgender.
Describe the connections that you or your organization have already established that will contribute to the success of the project.
There has been initial connection between my radio station and the community when we invited them to talk about their experience to learn about how to be a good Muslim and transgender. At that time, we came across to continue the collaboration into other forms.
How many participants do you think will be involved in your project?
It is expected that at least 10 participants will join in the project and their participation will be maintained through other future collaborations, i.e. radio talks, multiculturalism campaign, and sharing lesson learnt session involving multidimensional stakeholders. These 10 participants then are encourage to transfer the skills to others.
Besides the microgrant funding, what other resources and support are you seeking for your project to ensure its success?
We already have an audio production tools and a strong connection with a school of broadcasting at a private university in town. Briefly, we have some of the equipment and Rising Voices could help on financing the training delivery.
